This book is about as satisfying as a cold cup of coffee. Do not believe the hype.
The concept has potential and the second story was better than the rest but still clunky writing. This author has never heard of “show, don't tell” and fees the need to constantly explain what characters are feeling instead of making it obvious through their words and actions, ie ‘”Goodness..” Kohtake said in surprise to the fact that it wasn't only those traveling back in time who had to follow annoying rules.' Also repetitive retelling of boring details, and random extremely mundane tangents such as encyclopedia entry style descriptions of Picasso's career or explaining what pregnancy is...
- Hermanas: no he aguantado a la hermana mayor.
Logic not found.
5 stars for whatever the author was smoking. Abandoned at 30%. Now amazed that I managed even that much.
Probably I could have like it in a play but these short stories felt so plain and it was hard to care for the characters. I anticipated this book for a long time and I guess I was a little disappointed :(
If you like scifi that doesn't seem like scifi, this book is for you. If you like time travel but you'd like to read a different type of time travel, this book is for you. If you prefer more character driven and emotional stories, this book is for you.
This will make my top 10 favorites of the year, no doubt.
This is a collection of four related short stories and folks who like emotional deep dives into character relationships will like this. The first was my least favorite, but I adored the last three.
I enjoyed this a lot more the more I read. There was something about the writing style, maybe, that my brain really struggled to get behind at first. This was possibly due to Kawaguchi also being a playwright, but the longer I sat with it and allowed myself to be immersed in that vivid-in-my-imagination coffee shop, the more I was transported and was able to be hit with waves of feelings.
It's a comfy read that feels almost anthology-like with the way it's formatted, and I really enjoyed it. Perfect for one sitting with a coffee, or multiple sittings curled up in lots of blankets. Tears were shed and I'm glad I stuck with this despite my initial hesitancy.
Rebekah Weatherspoon is a feel good author for me, and this series was my happy place. Set on a ranch filled with friends, family, dogs, and horses, it features relatable heroes and heroines. These characters are not without struggles, or representations seem rarely in romance, or novels in general.
Jesse is demi, and largely sexually inexperienced. Lily-Grace has vitiligo, and is coming off a bad relationship. At first they're adversarial, and she kidnaps his dog for a few minutes. As one does, but they're a great match.
When I started I was unsure how much I'd enjoy it, but by the end I was teary eyed. Truly a beautiful book and reminds you of the power you have in the present to take control of your life in the future :')
Absolutely loved this book's take on time travel and the way it reiterates how nothing's ever black or white. I loved how we slowly get introduced to different characters and how familial they become towards the end. I loved how each character sought something and came up with their own unique conclusion, something that I hadn't expected. Also, poignantly beautiful writing <3

I enjoyed this book. I really like how slow-paced it is and how it focuses on different characters and their stories.
I was quite bored throughout the story. It had beautiful sentences though, but it was just an okay read for me.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold is one of those books that feels calming to read. Most of the topics that was delved into were heavy but the writing felt calm throughout.
Actual rating: 3.5⭐
Not bad at all. It's just a little hard to get truly attached to the characters, because each story is too short. Quite emotional, but overall it's a pretty light read.
This book has the usual Japanese calm tone and I liked it, the stories in this book are not as captivating as I expected it to be, although I did feel for one of the stories, why didn't the other get to me? I thought the last one was a little rushed, just like when the coffee is about to get cold, it ends with wanting more.
It was hard for me to visualize the plot for some reason. I would watch this adaptation if it becomes a show. Very descriptive too which is ironic. Quick read as well
