I'm so glad that these are being made they are really quality books that have fantastic adventures and illustration. ~Ashley
Awesome addition to the animated series. Quick read for us older fans, but still worth it.
It was ok, some of the artwork was better that the others. I just needed more of Appa!! o(╥﹏╥)
Cute and I like that the much of the drawing style matches the show's, but besides a couple of stories a lot of this is fluff
Just before reviewing this adorably amazing comic book let me just say...
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER TV SHOW!!!!! It is by far my absolute favorite and I won't take it back! Everything about it is amazing, I've never watched a show that got me as hooked like this one... And Toph, Zuko, and our Uncle Iroh are my favorites characters for different reasons!!! I didn't see any uncle Iroh here tho... >< Anyways back to the comicbook review...
It is greatly illustrated with different kinds of styles which I found adorable! I didn't like that Zuko wasn't in the cover tho... It is basically a collection of mini stories that happened in between the episodes of the show, the adventures that didn't make it in TV... and some in the end of the show. Suki was there too!!! Sokka was funny here as always, and Katara as a responsible motherly and quite powerful waterbender. Toph's jokes are still the BEST!!! And Aang is just... fine! If you are a fan of the show you should probably read the comics the novels and maybe watch TLOK too... and look out for The Legend of Genji and my fanfic Onida: The new avatar in Wattpad. It is about the next avatar after Genji who is a firebender from the Sunwarriors in the new age of technology and global warming... cool stuff!!! And Avatar is way too Anime to not be an Anime... fight me!!! (no really don't) Anyways I Loved this!!!
mai is super ooc and (spoiler characters) motivations make zero sense. Art is nice as always but none of the beautiful full pages the last one in the series had.
I didn't like this one as much as the previous stories, I have to say. Although it was an interesting read with unexpected turns, there were also childishly presented ideas an annoying event resolutions. I sadly can't discuss them without spoiling the plot, so I'll put them at the end of this review.
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
The things that annoyed me:1. Kiyi and Ursa's resolution. After the events of The Search, where Ursa got her old face back, Kiyi has been scared of her and didn't want to be in her presence. But then, right at the end of Smoke and Shadows, she magically forgot it all and accepted Ursa as her mother again. They never spoke about it, Kiyi just magically forgot she was scared of Ursa. Even though Kiyi has been shown to be mature enough to have complex thought, no one ever talked to her about how she's making Ursa feel, or even explained to her what happened to Ursa. Ursa facing Ozai was the only meaningful thing that happened to her since The Search.2. Speaking of which, Ursa and Ozai's conversation was so childishly written. That whole "Grovel before me" sad talk was very silly. Ozai has always been known to be a good manipulator. Surely, he would have some wit up his sleeve after Ursa had stood her ground, or was her not being scared of his just so inconceivable?3. Mai and Kei Lo. I felt sorry for the poor boy the moment I saw him show interest in Mai. I was really hoping that Zuko and Mai will stay separated and that maybe the writer will subverge the trope and keep Mai and Kei Lo together. As the story progressed, it almost seemed like Zuko got used to the idea of Mai dating someone else. But then at the very end Kei Lo breaks up with Mai for no apparent reason. Well, at least he didn't die for Maiko -.-4. Azula's big plan. If her plan was to slowly push Zuko to become more like her, why would she ever tell him that so early on? It's like her real plan has been to help him learn from her own misgivings, all along...
Overall I enjoyed this collection of short comics following around the cast and characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, the broad range of art styles made for a somewhat disconnected feel. I most enjoyed the stories where the art closely mimicked the original animation, or where the art was a bit more realistic. Thankfully, those entries made up most of the volume.
