BUA BUA BUAAA.
4.5 But rounding up! Such a good book! It was definitely a page turner. I loved the characters and felt like I knew them really well. I won't talk about the ending but I will say I was guessing til the very last page. The book also has an underlying moral lesson. Some really good takeaways especially for young adults. I recommend this book for anyone who likes murder mysteries and a bit of a thrill. I am interested in reading the rest of the series
Me ha encantado. Es verdad que al principio Pippa no me caía del todo bien pero la he ido cogiendo cariño a lo largo del libro. Ravi es un ser de luz y se merece la vida entera.
Tengo ganas de seguir con la trilogía la verdad.
It's not always that a book lives up to the hype for me, but this one did. 4.5 Stars
Not because the writing is incredible, even though the Audiobook IS, but because it is good enough to grab you and keep you hooked until the end, and maybe it is incredible in that sense.
Pip isn't the most intelligent character I've ever had, but her flaws don't outweigh her purpose. Better than that Ravi is one of the few MMC that I haven't been put off in a long time. He's sweet and loving and by the end, I was rooting for them, just because they both deserved something genuinely good.
I'm usually on top of mysteries, so the first big twist didn't catch me by surprise, but the second and all that it entailed did, which is another reason for this being a high rating. I think it is one of the few books that a lot of people will be surprised by and that's a huge merit.
The thing I liked the most about these books was the meeting with Ravi's parents. Not because of the sappiness, but because they were owned and they got it, it is hopeful and I am a believer at the heart.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder – I didn't like it
I decided to read it after it was recommended to me and it is so highly reviewed but it just left me.. disappointed. It almost became an official DNF but I powered through.
I keep trying to tell myself that it's a YA novel and written for that age group but you have got to be kidding me with some of these plot points...
Spoilers ahead
so Pip decides to interview Mr Ward and when she finds out he lied, she goes back and is all “You lied, tell me why” and he's all “okay, I'll tell you intimate details of my job and how business is conducted and this detailed story. No problem” even though she is a highschool student talking to a teacher
Then she basically does the same to a drug dealer and fearlessly runs in demanding information with her romantic interest. I'm sorry but Ravi demanding the list of drugs and the drug dealer being like “ok!” Is just too much
I did enjoy the twist of it not actually being Andie in the attic, but it just felt so rushed at the end for everything to tie up so nicely. I wanted more of that back story and not just a quick few lines to try to explain it away.
I read a lot of YA fiction and I felt like beyond big “wow” moments (like the camping trip and losing Barney) that were there for shock factor, Pip encountered little to no resistance in her quest and all these adults were just so eager to tell her everything from secrets to illegal activities, to sexual assaults occurring and they don't even know her.
Not to mention the stagnant dialogue where a character would start to reveal some of their backstory, and Pip would just proceed with a “That's cool. So ANYWAYS..”
Honestly? Wouldn't recommend! It just didn't have any believability for me.
Oh the suspense. The mystery. It got me so hooked, I was even thinking about it in my sleep. I was certain who the culprit is at the beginning, but then doubted myself. And again, and again. I gave up with the guesswork and let the story did all the work.
And boy, was my mind blown. So the person I suspected in the beginning is the the culprit, somehow, but that's not the whole story. The whole story got me flummoxed. I had to go back few pages and re-read everything, word by word just to get my brain to digest it all. And my brain went “THE. HECK.”
The writing is engaging, though it can be a bit slow at parts, but that doesn't ruin the pace at whole. It keeps you at the edge of your seat, biting your nails, questioning yourself if you're ready for the mystery to be unraveled. And Pip, my dear Pip, I'm a fan.
3.5 stars.
Don't get me wrong- it's a fun ride. Well.... fun in the sense of a non-real murder story.
Just a bit (this might be an understandment) unbelievable. I much prefer my young teen detectives to be a little more realistic, like Nancy Drew or Veronica Mars- so my bar is pretty darn high for a type of story like this.
I liked Pip, but I wanted just A LITTLE more about her personality- because what was she like before this case? We get glimpses that are strong, but not enough throughout the story.
The second half of this book is very fast paced and exciting though- the kind where you don't want to put it down.
Not life changing- just entertaining, and sometimes that's the kind of read you need.
The book was okay, earning a solid 3 stars. The narrative is presented in a capstone project format, which gives it a refreshing start, but this wears off quickly and it becomes just another YA mystery novel. As a mystery, it is decent and entertaining with expected twists and turns. In the end, it wraps up nicely. I was persuaded to read it based on the high ratings it received, but it did not live up to my expectations. I may not have been the target audience.
Lastly, regarding the Dutch ebook publication, it was formatted as a PDF even though it is in epub format. This was likely done to mimic the layout of the printed version, but this did not work well on my e-reader as it was poorly scaled. I ended up switching to the English version, which was much more e-reader friendly. Buyers should be aware of this issue.
WHAT THE HELLLLLLLLL
WAS NOT EXPECTING IT WTF?
I truly believed it was max and then when they revealed it was Elliot I was shocked but the BECCA?!?!! Omg such a good read??
It was ok, quick and entertaining with a twist here and there I didn't guess. For me it was very far fetched, a little irresponsible, and too convenient to put as a 4 star though.
This was a fun read. Thanks to Nam for encouraging me to read it!
Big TW: Dog dies. On page. For those of us sensitive to those things.
Pip is a fun protagonist. I loved the way it was written with Pip's perspective/chapters and the transcripts and her project woven in.
Multiple twists that I definitely didn't see coming.
Would recommend this as a good YA thriller. Good way to live vicariously throught a protag who solves a murder, for those us interested in true crime.
THESE TW MIGHT BE SPOILERS SO DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED
Other TW:
rape, drugging girls at parties, statutory rape, death of parent, kidnapping, physical abuse
A fun thriller. Overall, for a YA novel, it's pretty well done. The slow introduction of characters keeps you from guessing the end right off the bat. There are a few things to nit-pick and I think the main character is a little boring but I'll read the next few books for sure.
SO SO GOOD plot twist after plot twist came with this book i do have to admit a slow start/hard to get into with the first 20 pages but after that i was hooked i couldve never predicted the ending
I haven't read a mystery/thriller book in quite some time, so I didn't really know what to expect and if the book will be able to hold my attention.
To my surprise, it did!
Right from the start, I tried to figure out (together with pip, the protagonist) who was responsible for the murder of Andie.
Let's just say, I did not expect the plot twist/reveal of what happened to andie.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm looking forward to grabbing the second book.
It think this book is a little over-hyped. I don't think it's a bad book, but I was expecting more than this. I think it's a title weird why everyone is telling so much to her, she isn't the police, she's doing a school project...
But despite that I enjoyed reading it and I didn't expect the killer at all!
This was one of the best, most intriguing, and well-written books I've read. I loved the characters, the story, and the idea. I was partially right about the person who did this, but I didn't expect that other person (or rather, I hoped it wouldn't be them for the sake of their family). But I loved it all and I'm very happy about the ending. 5/5
one of the best whodunnit that I've read, and I've read A LOT. Highly recommended!
