I haven't read this genre in a while and it was SO GOOD. I connected with Chloe right away and I keep second guessing everyone around her (and even her mind)
Amazing book
Very predictable. Also, being from Louisiana, I couldn't help but notice the glaring cultural errors. No one here has ever steamed a crawfish or used Ole Bay to season them...
I enjoyed reading this quite a bit but toward the end, it got a little silly. The plot twists weren't shocking, it just made you kinda hate everyone. I really didn't like that it made the father's character weaker in the process of the big reveal.
It was enjoyable and if it was a movie, I'd take the time to watch it, but at the end of the day, it's very similar to every other book in this genre.
An okay read, I guess. The writing was good but it was very predictable. Even though the author tried to insert some doubt, it didn't work for me. I knew very early on what happened in the past (by only one sentence in a dialogue between 3 characters) and guessed who was doing it in the present as soon as the character appeared.
The MC, besides being an unreliable narrator drunk and high 24/7, did so many stupid things. I was baffled most of the time. And then the far-fetched details kept piling up...
Didn't really work for me.
Unreliable drunk female narrator has been traumatized in the past... can't trust anyone but jumps into bed with the most sus guy she can find... who ends up being the killer... but with a twist! she can't go to the police for some inconsequential reason that makes her seem “crazy”.... has debilitating anxiety and paranoia except when she's throwing herself into obviously deadly situations for no reason...
Sound familiar? Yeah, I didn't like the first book I read like this, and they aren't getting any better now. Why do I keep reading them? I clearly drink too much wine and pop too much Xanax to remember this simple fact. Don't kill me.
The first couple of chapters were very detailed. The plot was very creatively done though. I was glad I read the book.
I immediately zeroed in on the brother. Then the narrator leads you to the boyfriend so I think ok maybe I was wrong about the brother. The author does a good job with breadcrumbs that lead you to where she wants you. In the end we learn the brother really did do it and that the boyfriend had nothing to do with it. There is also a surprise character involved that I hadn't suspected. It was slow in parts that made it feel longer then it was. Also, the mother who is non-verbal due to an self inflicted injury was able to communicate with Chloe after 20 years. This was so unbelievable. This would be a good book for someone just getting into thrillers.
As usual, I could have done without all the profanity. But the book was extremely well written. It was reminiscent of “Woman in the window,” with a little “Marsh King's Daughter.”
It was very slow and a lot of description, but I didnt see the ending coming! It threw me, I really liked it.
This was such a good, solid thriller, especially as a debut! Plenty of twists and red herrings to keep you guessing throughout, and I was actually quite surprised when the killer was finally revealed. Listened to this one on audio and really liked the narrator, great job by her.
Mixed feelings here. Overall, I liked it. However, though the basic structure was good/well-written, there were also a lot of repetitive passages and phrases. My biggest problem was that the plot, though interesting and complex, was so deliberately deceptive to the point I knew the likely twists within the first few chapters. That ended up becoming the main focus for me. I also felt like we were left with a lot of gaps in the end — characters we never got to revisit. I'd recommend this to people who haven't read a lot of thrillers, but to seasoned readers in this genre, it might not be as enjoyable.
The plot is promising. The narrative, meanwhile, could be a bit better. I understand that the story is written from the Chloe's POV and yes, I get it that she has been through enough. But to have to read her inner monologue about the past, how she droned on and on and on about it all in her head, well, it gets pretty boring and draggy at worst.
For a traumatised person wary with men, though, she sure is quick enough to sleep with another man right at the first sign of trouble with the fiance. I was like, huh? And honestly, she is a tad selfish. Of course, she deserves to be after all the troubled past, but somehow I feel like her personality is... mostly confused. Chloe herself gives me some sort of anxiety. I really could not understand her, or emphatize with her.
Even though I could quickly guess the outcome, there were some part where I questioned myself but the storyline is pretty predictable, except for the part of Daniel's sister. That was totally unexpected. Everything else? Mediocre.
I don't know, I thought this was fine? I think I let it get overhyped in my head and was expecting something mind-blowing. What I got instead was a solid debut novel, but I wasn't particularly in love with the prose or characters, and I wasn't really surprised by most of the reveals, either, so. I liked it, didn't love it. 3 fireflies out of 5.
Great psychological thriller that kept me guessing (sometimes correctly, sometimes not) until the end.
The first half of this book dragged and then BAM! Everything happened all at once! I enjoyed the latter part of the book even though I could tell who the killer was from a mile away. But, there are so many layers to this story that it still ended up surprising me.
Is it just me or did anyone else notice, the first half of the book, the author kept incorporating the word flicker. Maybe it's just a coincidence or maybe it was their favourite word, after all the book is titled A Flicker in the Dark.

Worth?: Yeah, I guess
As someone from Louisiana I am always excited to see what stereotypes they put in the book. This one did okay. As for the story, I thought I knew who the bad guy was at the beginning but figured it out around the middle of the story. Not too bad. Did I like the main druggie girl? Eh, not too much. I get the reason for her craziness but at the same time it was just annoying.
Now... as for Daniel. Him leaving is an annoyance... The twists and turns and dive was good. I mean it wasn't GREAT but it wasn't horrible as well. I know I scored it a 3.75 but I don't think it is worthy of the 4.
My first guess was a red-herring! Lots of twists at the end. I enjoyed the trip!
This is a pretty good debut. I could see where this was going very early on but it didn't take away from enjoying the story overall. The writing flows well and makes for a quick read. Despite knowing what the twist is, it was hard to put this one down. Definitely recommend for those looking for a thriller to read.
At first I thought I had guessed the twist that was coming near the beginning of the book. And as I continued to read it was so playing into it then at the end the author takes a shovel and says nope just kidding!! I was thoroughly entertained by this book and cannot wait to read more from this author
