Knew who the killer was early on. Was hard to suspend belief. just couldn't believe any decent parents would hide their sons killings and take his place. Or that he didn't kill for 20 years after that. also successful psychiatrist is a bill popper and alcoholic. Just hard to believe any of this and therefore could not get into the story.
Boring. Maybe partly because I accidentally read a spoiler in a review when I was checking to see if this was worth a listen, I hope the person who did that always feels uncomfortably warm when they try to sleep.
Writing style was too choppy for me. Flashbacks and present day were within the same chapters and I couldn't tell what timeline I was in. Would have rather liked shorter alternating timeline chapters back to back!
This was a fun one but I was thrown for that ending. Definitely 10/10 recommend adding to your thriller read list from the library.
easy read with an interesting twist that did surprise me even when I thought I had figured out what the twist was gonna be.
Three stars because I did like the twists/ending as plot points. Would've been lower rating otherwise because the execution was lacking and the main character was insufferable at times.
It's got some problems for sure, but that's okay cause I had a fairly decent time listening
The first parts of this book read very fast, but after a couple more chapters I started getting immensely bored. The narrator/main character was, to me, incredibly unlikeable and annoying. She made the most stupid and nonsensical decisions. But I actually didn't like any of the characters in the entire book. Especially Daniel was super weird even after the revelation at the end. You can add as many explanations in the last few chapters as you like, he still acted super weird and ridiculous.
The way many of the pages suddenly jumped between conversations in the past and at the moment was also very annoying and confusing. It made it unclear what has actually happing in the present moment. The whole book was very unpleasant to read in general as well, I disliked the narration style immensely.
1.5 stars. While reading, I found the protagonist to be somewhat annoying, especially during about 20% of the book, where it felt like she kept rambling, becoming repetitive and somewhat boring. I had difficulty empathizing with her anxiety. I must admit, I questioned why she was chosen for the role of a therapist as she seemed somewhat unfit for it. The story began on a strong note, but unfortunately, it became somewhat unbearable due to its predictability. In my opinion, this book is one that can be easily skipped, as it took me quite a long time to finish it.
the writing style was simple enough to keep me engaged & completely pulled into the story
the plot twist definitely got me fooled, like i was acting so smug thinking i solved everything then boom
there's nothing crazy about this book, i don't have any strong feelings about it but it was a nice & quick read
the locked door is basically an aliexpress version of this book lmao

I wanted to love this, but there were too many red herrings that didn't actually fool you, and unimportant tangents. By the end of the book I was just tired.

When a girl is found missing in Baton Rouge, Chloe is confronted with the ghosts of her past. She is constantly reminded of the 6 girls who went missing 20 years ago, and of her father who was convicted for their murders. After a second girl goes missing, Chloe starts to see similarities between these two girls, and the 6 who went missing 20 years ago. Chloe can't help but get involved.
I have not read a book as fast as I read this one in literal years. I thought it was a super fast read and I was so hooked that I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, even though some parts got emotionally heavy and a few things felt out of place- it was never enough to take me out of it. There were several twists that caught me completely off guard, and while I was able to predict others- I should say i had a very strong suspicion (that turned out to be correct), but I could never commit to ONE person because I was so suspicious of so many different people (I am a very wary to trust) that i suspected EVERYONE was guilty. Honestly the notes I took while reading were pretty funny to look back on. Looking back on my notes though (I guessed part of the ending about 22% of the way through haha, I felt proud).
While I do recommend this book, there are heavy and possibly triggering subjects covered. I struggled reading some parts of the story due to my own mental health and I enjoyed it but everyone is different and it's so important taking care of your mental health! ❤️ I highly suggest looking up what the trigger warnings for this are book before picking it up!
Twists and turns until the very last page! For me it took a bit of time to ramp up the story but once it was moving I was gripped!!
I've been around this genre a little too long for this one. Yes, well written, great back story set in Louisiana- in a town whose pride is in being the crawfish capitol- with all the great small town character that implies. The issue I have is that with a finite cast of characters the reader easily figures out what the protagonist cannot. And speaking of the protagonist- she is quite the flawed character, which is not a bad thing, it's actually a solid layer, just reader beware. This serial killer story is messy. While I easily figured out who the bad guy was, I really felt the characters as the writer drew them. In particular, the teenage victims. They jumped off the page.
I've read two Stacy Willingham books in the last week. I do enjoy her writing and the twists she adds to her plots. However, I didn't particularly care for the main female character in A Flicker in the Dark. I thought she was too impulsive with her thoughts and desires didn't always think logically. I did still enjoy the story. I'm do love a good a murder mystery. Although I did hope for a love ever after happy ending, I appreciate that there wasn't one. Every story doesn't end in a happily ever after.
I was really invested in this book until the last 75 pages. A weird romance thing, and the realization that what I had guessed at the very beginning ended up actually being true, plus the fact that it was a bit all over the place, lessened my enjoyment. I feel like it ended in a good place, but it could have been cleaned up a bit.
