This book has been like a rollercoaster ride. I don't quite understand the hatred towards Nesta, maybe it's the fact that she never felt the need to protect Feyre or something else. She's genuinely a character though and it's amazing to see.
Rhysand is as lovely and amazing as always. You can tell he's the epitome of a man written by a woman.
Feyre has always been a strong individual and is, no doubt, a very good and not so annoying character unlike many fmc's.
Cassian is amazing but I think I like Azriel's fire better. Both are overly protective and the Illyrian wings, come on.
Mor is just something, I don't know how to describe her but she's better than everyone else by a lot. I wish that she got her happiness with Az but that may not happen.
Edit: Thank you SJM, for creating the final 100 pages, I mean. I loved having a look at the Hybern situation again, learning more about both Lucien's and Cassians actions towards Elain and Nesta. And all around knowing that Lucien doesn't buy into Feyre's words at the end, it all speaks volumes.
Also with Mor and Az, I'm glad nothing happens between them. And I don't like her near as much as I did before, the best thing she ever did was disappear for most of SF
Edit #2: Ever since my first read through of the books, I've realised how much I hate Rhys and leads to my impartiality towards this book.
It's a 3.5 star read for me, and I've been wanting to change the rating for ages
6.20/10.00
If anyone is reading this book and sort of getting bored halfway in, do not give up. This book is solid world building and sizzling, incredible romance. Worth every minute...
This was so good! All the things that bugged me from the first book are resolved in this one. The characters have more depth, Fayre grows a ton, and the world feels richer. Several scenes are so well written, I feel like I watched them, not read them. Absolutely loved it, can't wait to read the next.
wow it took me a really really long time to finish this, i was kind of in a slump and was going to give it 4stars but the ending blew me away and made it 5stars!!!! amazing book
I'm listening to the audio books and Jennifer Ikeda is the only reason I made it through the first 2 books.
DAMN BRO WHAT
THE WAY FEYRE IS SO SMART
Also I think we all know that Lucien knows what Feyre is about to do..
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGHHGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGHG
The sex is quite good.
I love fae stories, but I don't love romance and smut in my books. The rest of the story is great. I can't wait for the Queens to get what they deserve.
I know that the ACOTAR series can be very polarizing it terms of if it is good or not, but I have been enjoying my journey! I noticed myself getting so into the book, that I would vocally complain or react to scenes as I'm reading (can't say that about a lot of books that I've read in the past one/two years).
I felt so torn between Tamlin and Rhysand in the beginning, not wanting to believe that Feyre and Tamlin's romance will fall apart when they finally got together. PTSD will do that to ya. While I don't completely hate Tamlin, because he too is experiencing PTSD and is vulnerable to influence (as you see with Ianthe and the King), I am very upset about his acceptance of Feyre going back to him. BFFR Tamlin. Why are you so easily fooled? I also don't get the distain for Lucien. He too had to deal with Tamlin's abusive behavior and did the best he could.
Rhysand and Feyre's romance started initially for me as something I didn't want. I hoped, despite all the spoilers I've allowed myself, that Tamlin will come to the rescue. As the story moved on and Tamlin fucked up over and over again, I grew to like their relationship. I appreciate that Rhysand is not another brooding arrogant bad boy that only behaves in an emotionally constipated way, before and after the confession. He is open and shares his emotions.
Chapter 55 was not as “spicy” or “smutty” as people make it out so seem, though I'm a little biased with my unfiltered Internet experience starting at the age of 13 (Tumblr has made me seen things). I can see how its spicy for people who haven't read any fandom smut or erotica, but the chapter is alright. It didn't get me “excited” or anything. The chapter were Feyre and Rhysand are messing around in the Inn is better in conveying spicyness than Chapter 55.
I do see the flaws though, especially with the writing. I can't tell you how many times I would roll my eyes at repeated words or phrasing. A couple mentions of “mate” is fine during the chapter were their mate bond is truly acknowledged, but after that it just gets cringy. I know that this way of writing continues into the next books, and while I can ignore them and enjoy the book nevertheless, the repetition comes across as juvenile as the story goes on. I hope the Crescent City series is not like that too...
This is probably one of the best books I've ever read in my life. And honestly, all I have to say at the end of this is: F*ck you, Tamlin.
AUDIOBOOK & EBOOK
This series is incredible. This one took me a little longer to read because I had a few books going at once. The storyline is great, so much more than just the romance. I'm excited to continue the series.
I love finding a book that makes me gasp and squeal with excitement and shock. Although I certainly find parts of the writing ridiculous, (the overuse of the word feral anyone? A billion half smiles? Feyre going off again about how she's a stupid human trapped in a fairy body? There are certainly parts that irk me.) the way this book had me hooked and needing to know more was such a thrill. I have been listening to the books. I started the first book on Tuesday and finished it Thursday. I started this one Thursday night and finished it this Sunday morning No, I haven't been getting enough sleep. Yes, I have been telling my fiancé that we're joining the court of dreams.
Feyre's pain was so relatable and although her time with Tamlin was brief, I was... I could feel the fear of someone you loved betraying your very spirit. The way he dominated her life and how she shrunk to fit it. Undoubtedly, they are both severely traumatized by the events under the mountain, and how he handles it by asking her to still be weak, to be weaker than before...I was so angry and happy she got away. The way Maas described how Feyre felt the words “protect” with every thrust has haunted me.
I appreciated the illustration of finding and loving the thing that you need and want, but then, after the mountain and how it changed her physically and mentally, needing something different. The disappointment when Tamlin refused to grow with her.
Quick gush:
OMG! MY CRUSH ON RHYSAND IS A LOT. Then again, I absolutely love the trope of bad guy who's actually good guy and btw, he's hot. I love it. I know it's a trope and I can understand why people find it forced, but it's the trope I love and I was more than willing to accept it. Also, the sex scenes with Rhysand are hotter.
This book is a great continuation of the story and really gripping, read the last 250 pages in one sitting. Absolutely loved it and it's better than the first book.
Rhysand and his friends are a lovely addition to the series and if SJM decided to write a book on Amren id buy it instantly.
It was really really good, I love it ! The first book left me in a “meh” mood, but a lot of people keep pushing me to read the second one, because it really starts there. And I can't agree more with them ahaha. First, no argument here, I'm team Rhysand ! I can't support Tamlin, so selfish and inconsiderate... Second : this book was so hot !! like a lot !! I can't imagine how the next ones could be more than the second one.
In sum up, I love this book, some cliffhanger, the characters were good, funny and pleasant to discover, with various personalities ^^ and Rhysand was the best, definitively !!! I really like what the end announces for the third book.
As it turns out you can excuse sexual assault if someone is your ✨mate✨
I listened to the audiobook in two parts and the library delivered them two weeks apart so I really finished this in two days... so don't get me wrong, it's fun. It's an entertaining book and there are parts I like but there are some goofy parts and the twists are too easy to see coming. I do like this more than the first book, but I wish there had been more of a hint of Tamlin being a cuckoo crazy guy because this felt a little out of the blue. You're telling me that he completely goes to the bad guy side just to get his girlfriend back, after he just spent the second half of the first book, watching that girlfriend be tortured by the bad guys main lady? Make it make sense.
Anyways, I'm feeling generous, because I did enjoy them, and I could see them becoming a good TV show or movie someday.
Excuse any spelling, I'm listening to these on audio so I have no idea how the names are actually spelled.
4.5/5 ⭐️s, rounded up.
Talk about a glow up. A Court Of Mist & Fury is not a perfect book, but it might just be a perfect sequel. Sarah J. Maas does a great job of expanding the lore, plot, and universe; creating a compelling reason to revisit these characters; introducing new characters who enhance this book and; generally keeping a reader's interest. Themes about trauma, abuse, and liberation are consistent throughout Maas' sequel. Feyre is still not my favorite protagonist by any means, but the events of the last book made a lot of her whining feel more warranted. The flaws I see with ACOMAF are easily forgivable when everything else in the book is so good.
As for those flaws: I can't give this book a full five stars because there are instances where the author decides to show instead of tell. For instance, we get a chapter where one character tells the story of everything that has happened so far from their perspective, which felt redundant and annoying. There are also certain conflicts that feel like artificial concoctions. I blame Maas' editor for not making her cut those chapters out.
However, if you enjoyed the first book even a little, then the second book will blow you away.
2 stars filled with bitter disappointment after the author tossed me a bone and told me to either swallow or choke on it
It's not that the book is bad or atrocious, I've read way worse, it's the way the author chooses to tell the story that has robbed me of any interest I had in the characters.
As some other reviews stated, if book one didn't exist this would make for a way better read. As it stands i couldn't care less about any of the characters because the author certainly doesn't.
The discarded toy that is tamlin continues to get used to build up Rhys as the one true love and it feels lazy and lacklustre. Everything tamlin's character was gets tossed out the window, like it was all some fever dream or mirage. With the way he was basically a silent prop in the background for the second half of book one it doesn't surprise me, but I'm still disappointed.
