Pretty fun follow up to what seems like is going to be a really engaging series! While the focus of the story wasn’t exactly where I’d like to be, the additional world building was done really well. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
I would read anything in the Fablehaven universe and while this wasn't my favorite of those books, it still scratched a deep itch in my brain. Well worth it if you too have fond memories of the series.
While this was still a fun world to be in, something about it just felt a little more childish than the first entries in the series. I know they’re written for a younger age group, but I’ve gone back and re-read the original stories and they felt more “adult” than this one. Still absolutely worth reading if you’re a fan of the series.
This was an interesting and engaging listen that was technically very well done. Lots of great voice work and special effects. What it needed was just to be longer. I don’t feel satisfied with what I got and not in a “I want more of this world” way, but rather a “that’s it?” way. Still at only like 1:15 long, it doesn’t feel like wasted time at least.
I suspect this was a much better book compared to my own enjoyment of it. I just simply really wasn't in the mood for it during most of my time reading yet it was a book club book so I couldn't simply set it aside for later. Overall, it had a lot going for it and I hope to re-read it at some point in the future on more of my own terms.
This was a quick and easy read, but this book fell into the trap so many others in the genre fell into. Namely, not a lot happened and what did happen felt out of character and disjointed. Really hoping things come back together or it might be a DNF on the series for me after Book 6.
This entry in the series had a lot of what was essentially palace intrigue and it just wasn’t very well done, in my opinion. I’m ready for the series to get back to just killing a bunch of monsters, but I think that’s unlikely at this point. Still a decent amount of good entertainment throughout.
It’s actually so nice to have a litRPG series complete in a trilogy. What a breath of fresh air! The same issues of the previous books in the trilogy are still very much there, but having a completed storyline really helps this book out.
While this is mainly just a fun, popcorn read with way too much childish humor that will grate on you after a while, there are some genuinely good plot elements showing up. I’ve read worse books for sure. Just turn your brain off and enjoy.
Look, was this good? No, not particularly. Was it easy to read and entertaining? For sure. It’s a popcorn action movie crossed with an rpg. Nothing too unique to see here, but it’s still enjoyable.
This isn’t the best sci-if time travel story you’ll ever read, but it certainly isn’t the worst either. It’s got some fun/unique ideas covered in just a whole mess of tropes. Overall, a fun read.
While this is written in a much different style than I expected, I really enjoyed the journey of reading it. Stories about the human character in survival situations are almost always interesting and the author does a wonderful job of pulling all the disparate accounts together to tell one compelling narrative. Definitely worth a read!
While this isn't necessarily a good book or doing anything all that new, it is very much a fun book. It's quick and easy to read and entertaining throughout. Great palate cleanser
Fonda Lee put together such an engaging world in a very small amount of pages. The character work is top tier and you really get invested. Worth a read!
This may be stating the obvious, but if you liked Cradle, you’ll like this. A lot of fun insight into the greater world with epic scenes juxtaposed against some classic silliness. I think my one regret is I don’t remember some of the earlier stories quite well enough to jump directly into some of these stories. Still enjoyed them!
Like any short story collection, it’s hard not to compare the various stories against each other. Some were great and some were kinda duds. Overall, I enjoyed the collection as a whole though even if I would have traded several or these for more Temeraire or Scholomance.
Just a really nice collection of short stories where they all feel at least somewhat relevant and engaging.
I think this being Sanderson’s first novel really shows. Not necessarily in the contents or the prose itself, but it some of the pacing and rhythm of the book. That being said, it’s still a very enjoyable read with a unique and engaging plot. Absolutely worth a read for his fans.
While in many ways, this book is the antithesis of Mistborn, it still feels so much like Mistborn in a way that I didn't realize I had missed from Sanderson's writing style. The stakes and story are just as epic with this being part of the Cosmere, but it feels much more self-contained. A really enjoyable read!
I really wished I liked this more than I did. It had so much potential and it was just squandered for me. Characters aren't really characters so much as they're interchangeable wooden signposts with information written on them. The author clearly has some not great opinions of women as well. Ultimately, a cool world, interesting ideas, and horrible execution. I won't be reading book 2.
I enjoyed this, but I didn’t love it. It’s an engaging read, but the plot is a little meandering and I’m not sure it all ever fully came together for me. That being said, there’s a lot to like and the world created is very interesting with a lot of thought and intention put behind it.
This is brain melting in all the right ways and will have you turning the pages from start to finish. Cannot recommend enough.
Gotta give it to John Scalzi in that everything he comes up with is unique and interesting. Zachary Quinto also does a great job of narrating. Overall, a really nice and fun listen and well worth throwing on during a roadtrip.
This was a nice, little roadtrip listen. It’s nothing earth shattering and everyone’s clearly familiar with the story, but it’s a good length, Tim Curry does a great job with the voices, and it’s interesting enough.
I don’t recall if the writing has always been like this and I’m just noticing it now or if something has shifted on the author’s side, but 90% of the world building and rules being offered as an aside rather than actually written into the story has gotten incredibly annoying. Combined with the current storyline now having taken two entire books and still not being complete, with the author even acknowledging how ridiculous that is in the intro, I’m just getting a little fed up. I’m still going to keep reading, but score would be way worse if it weren’t an interesting and fun read.
