The novel follows their adventures as they explore their common heritage. Although it is not a sequel to Gaiman's previous novel American Gods, the character of Mr. Nancy appears in both books.

We were first introduced to the trickster Spider God, Anansi, or Mr. Nancy, in Gaiman's earlier novel American Gods. Here we meet his offspring, Fat Charlie and his brother Spider. Fat Charlie is one of those people that life happens to, and not in a good way. Spider, on the other hand, has inherited his father's godlike abilities and lives the life of Riley. Needless to say things get complicated when the two estranged brothers meet after their father dies.
Gaiman weaves a comic tale of brotherly love, embezzelment and voodoo that, in the last third of the novel, takes a darker turn. Wonderfully written and very readable I'd recommend this to anyone!
Let no one say that Neil Gaiman is not the king of urban fantasy. Certainly, Anansi Boys does nothing to bring his title under dispute; however, as a fan of American Gods, I found myself missing the darker, grittier tone of the latter. Anansi Boys is excellent, but will not meet the expectations of readers looking for American Gods redux.
