I don't think this was a great book, but I listened to the audio book over a weekend and greatly want to continue with the series.
I was a little put off at how often the author wanted us to know how hot the people were, and oh no, all 4 of them were in their underwear, how provocative.
I did very much enjoy the books being set in vancouver. And the group of misfits being in a guild worked really well as a story line.
I'm not sure why I started to read this. I'm pretty sure the kobo app recommended it.
As soon as it started off I knew it wasn't really my kind of book, but i was curious about the whole “seeing auras” and teenage psychic. How she needed to drown out everything so she wouldn't get overwhelmed by stimulus. I've had that feeling a few times so I kinda got attached.
That's the only redeeming part of the entire book for me. Once the love interest came in, I lost whatever remaining internet in the book, but I still had to finish it.
Other reviews have remarked how similar it is to twilight and even though I've never read twilight I can believe it. The relationship was very weak and one sided, made me feel sad about the female gender in general.
Some of the ending bits I liked, but overall I'd give it a meh.
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the book. I gobbled it up in a couple days. Sadly it felt more like a prequel world building rather than a story, and I feel like future books will have a romance which i'm definitely tired of. But the writing is the perfect kind of simple, where its an enjoyable read, and the book does include a map for those who like those.
Starting off, I generally don't like fantasy books, I love urban fantasy, but fantasy just doesn't get me. This sorta straddles the line. Its set in 1900 with some stuff in modern times.
I found the characters that the author chose to focus on were really fun and exciting and interesting. The rest I had trouble following.
I don't know what else to say. I enjoyed the whole experience, got lost a few times with all the characters, but it was an interesting story and felt different than normal. I might check out the next ones in the series, but it does feel like its going to be a long adventure.
I really enjoyed it. it's the first book I've read this year and that might have made a difference. it was way too short and at the same time I wouldn't want it any longer.
like all her books it made me feel very lonely but I squealed (inside) at parts and it makes me want to get out and do things.
Well written but I found the over the top sexual comments not only disgusting but completely unnecessary. The premise was interesting and for someone going though corporate shakeups it hit close to home. I essentially read it on one day which says something about the writing style but I also found it disgusting with a non satisfying ending.
I want to say this book was cashing in on the Hunger Games franchise but i think it came out before Hunger games did, and doesn't really have a lot in common.
I really wanted to see where things were going. I enjoyed the adventure, and will probably check out the next book at least.
I felt the book really layed on the message very thick. Very much that the idea of attractiveness is kinda subjective or something. I actually felt how much the main character pushed “I want to be pretty too” at the beginning of the book got really really annoying. That being said, it quickly moved on and found it quite interesting.
/end bad review
I did really enjoy this book, got lost on all the characters and politics though :(
Felt a little fantasy mixed in with the sci fi setting. I'm not sure I'll check out book two, but would recommend it to others.
I don't have much to say. It was neat. Had some cool concepts. I found it way too verbose. found myself skipping or skimming paragraphs even pages to make progress.
I generally don't enjoy fantasy books. I never really connect with the characters or setting. But I was so into this. I thought about the characters while working.
It was a super fluid story and I really liked it and don't have much else to say.
I'm glad I gave it a chance.
This book was really a lot of fun to read. And I love all the world building. I just didn't enjoy it as much as the first two so couldn't give it a 5. I think mostly because it has less of the awesomeness I loved about suze (but in no way she was diminished, just craved more).
Still a great book. Highly recommend but like the others more.
It was okay. Not really sure how to explain it. I would call it a made for TV movie. With cops. From the future.
I don't think it was as good as his earlier books. Very interesting premise.
Every other scalzi book I've read in a day. This took 3. Just wasn't as exciting as some of the rest.
Not bad, I'd just recommend his other books more.
Other than the last 20-30 pages of the book being a glossary/preview/etc, so I thought there was more to read than there was, it was good. Will eventually pick up the rest of the series to find out what is going on.
It was okay. Very cute. I think a lot of buildup and waiting due to kickstarter, so I think my expectations were really high. I would absolutely recommend it to others but its not the best thing ever.
I loved the first half so much. It was so interesting to think about a creature having more defined decision trees and very firm logic.
Sadly the last quarter kinda became a lot for me. That subtle digs at society went heavy handed and the plot got even weirder and I just kinda raced to get to the end.
Overall a cute and different book
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. To me it read like fanfiction. I feel like the book was paid by the word. Unnecessary description of menial tasks that, to me at least, felt like fluff.
The stories had a couple minor surprises, but generally you knew who was going to make it, who wasn't.
By the second half of the book, I started to skim through the pages. I just wanted to know how the story was going to end, I didn't care about the adventure along the way.
It just felt forced.
So wouldn't recommend :(
I unfortunately couldn't finish reading the book. It seemed like a neat idea, but after the first 25%, I just felt like I had to force myself to read more.
I'm sure others would enjoy it, but definitely not me.
I enjoyed the book. It's very short. Less than an hour to read. I was very afraid at the start as there were misspelled words and a lack of punctuation but quickly realized that it was intention (i thought it was bad ocr, even from amazon).
Overall a very powerful book. Very interesting look at intelligence. Echoes a lot of what I have been thinking. I'll admit I teared up at the end.
A+ would recommend.
Was a very fun and enjoyable read. I think it makes me really want to see the upcoming movie. I hope they keep all the great humor in an otherwise scary situation.
I really wanted to like this book. I liked the main character, and all the ties into the old native stories and mythos. But I really felt like I was constantly being beaten over the head with this information. Every chapter I was reminded that she had a native. She was super strong. Had powers. Etc.
I agree with some of the other reviews. The other characters in the book were pretty flat and simple. I didn't find I was very invested in the book, but I did manage to finish it.
So yea, it was okay. I didn't abandon it.
Such awesome new characters were introduced this book. I was kinda sad at the lacking of murphy (she took a trip at the start of the book), but the new characters and the chance to expand existing ones more than made up for it.
You know how they don't say don't judge a book by its cover? I know I judged it based on the title. I really thought I'd get a actionesk piece from the mad scientist's daughters point of view.
Instead I got a very touching life/love story of a daughter of a (mad) scientist.
I grabbed the sample off amazon. By the end of it I needed to find out what happened next so picked up the book right away. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to a lot of people, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters. Especially some of the secondary ones. Things were described in such a way that I could believe I was there experiencing the same thing.
I'm pretty sure I loved this book. I ended up staying up an extra 3 hours on saturday night reading.
The synopsis of the book certainly does it justice (Though I rarely read those anymore, I just check out the samples on amazon). The story jumps around a bit between a couple characters. Its hard to tell who the main character is, but for whatever reason it seems to work out.
I had trouble keeping track of some characters. It didn't help that I was on an e-reader and wasn't really able to flip back a few pages quickly. One paragraph will be the main character, the next will be from the point of view of someone he's interacting with. It got ..distracting near the end of the book.
Its very obvious to me the book was self-published (I had to do a big of google searching to confirm). It defiantly needed a bit of editing.
That being said, I would still absolutely recommend it to other people. Especially since the book is only $2.99 on the kindle store.
