Meh. The story was certainly engaging but I found myself rolling my eyes so many times at the ridiculous reactions almost all if not all of the women had toward the main source of evil. Wouldn't recommend.
Ugh. The only reason I kept reading is because I ran out of books for my flight home. Complete and utter nonsense. A collection of completely unrelated anecdotes either told by, or assigned to, two-dimensional characters. I didn't like or dislike anyone, but neither did I care what happened to them.
really liked it right up until the end. all of a sudden, the protagonist showed her true colours and i was no longer interested in her story.
such a cranky man in this. I've been following DL for years and never got this impression of him before but good god, man! he complains about EVERYTHING! (some of the recipes are good tho so keeping my copy.)
A worthwhile subject for sure, and the story of her childhood is indeed horrific, but unfortunately it's just not written well. It's more a “based on a true story” novel, rather than a memoir. Incident after incident, but without any introspection, which seems so odd considering the subject matter!
Clever concept but the character development was lacking. Too many cliches and pat endings. Would prob make for a better movie than book.
I appreciated learning more of Canadian history but didn't love the writing. Not gripping, characters not super well fleshed out (didn't read the sea captain's wife so unfamiliar with the characters but i don't think you should have had to considering this is a stand alone book), and i saw the big twist (if you can call it that) from the beginning.
Love Dawn but did not enjoy the format of this book; it's written in the form of letters to her family and closest friends but it just didn't work for me. I scoffed when i read some of the 1-star reviews on here, claiming it was boring. They're not wrong. Did not finish.
This is a very important book. Would recommend it anyone. My only criticism (hence the 4 stars rather than 5) is that unless you read it in a short window of time, it's hard to fall back into its rhythm if a few days go by in between reads. Each chapter follows a new albeit linked character from a preceding chapter, so it's more like a series of short stories. Very compelling.
I always read the 1-star reviews of an otherwise highly rated book and I can't help but think they're all written by white people who are not interested in learning. One reviewer labelled this book as full of hate but I could not disagree more.
This is one of those rare instances where I think it's best to watch the movie first.
I initially read this book and did not like Rachel at all and therefore did not care for the book. I love Emily Blunt tho and figured there's no way she could be so unlikeable, so unrelateable, so watched the movie. And yes I found it much easier to feel for her Rachel. So much so I thought I'd give the book another chance. The book IS better in that Megan is much more fleshed out (why is she naked all the time in the film? Male director??) and of course there's much more detail and back story with all the characters but I preferred the pivotal moment in the film with Lisa Kudrow on the train; I found it much more believable than book Rachel's just remembering everything.
Meh. I thought the first one was cute (altho i cannot NOT picture Neil as Ben from Never Have I Ever) so was curious to read the sequel. Couldn't help but feel the big conflict felt a little contrived. I guess i shouldn't be surprised at how formulaic the plot line was?
This was awful. She gives teenage girls a bad name. Autumn is one of the most annoying characters, let alone protagonists, i've ever read. I gave 0 shits about her. Can't even begin to understand why either Jamie or Finn would have feelings for her.
Read this on the plane and left it at the hotel. Absolute garbage. And don't even get me started on the awful grammar. How did this even get published?? And there's a follow up? What an absolute waste of paper.
3 ½ stars.
I really enjoyed it, right up till it finished. Cheap ending for me.
I'd still recommend it tho cos the story itself (or stories, I should say) I enjoyed – altho Nao's more so than Ruth's; at the same time, I enjoyed Ruth's eagerness to learn about Nao.
Absolutely hated this book!! Main character is horrible. Bitter, gossipy, manipulative — and that's when she's sober! Did not care about her at all. In fact, none of the characters in this book were likeable or appealing. Or even realistic! The mother of a very autistic boy gets her house completely renovated and seems surprised her son doesn't react well to all the changes?? Ugh I could go on with many other examples but honestly I just want to forget I ever read this book.
Meh. Took forever to get going. Lenu is an unappealing character although maybe that's the point? Not sure if I'll continue with the series. I feel like I'd have to soon or I'll forget everything that's happened thus far
