See allHonestly I think I would have liked the book a lot more if the narrator wasn't so terrible. She did character voices for everyone and they all sounded like high-pitched fairies or goofy dwarves. Even the bullies sounded like Steve Urkle. The story interested me enough to keep listening, but I wouldn't recommend the audio version to anyone.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book while I was listening to it, but also found myself forgetting about it as soon as I was done. Still, I'd like to keep reading the series.
It was fine. I kept listening, so it wasn't “bad”, but I found my mind wandering and had to repeatedly look up summary recaps for chapters because I couldn't keep the people and storylines straight. It seemed like the author kept adding more and more lore and history just when I thought I'd got things organized. I liked the diversity of characters and strong women, but the story didn't draw me in.
I loved this book. It's beautifully written and I loved the insight that the narrator interjected between the parts that moved the story along. The audio version is stellar, I may have found a new favorite voice actor.
I had to look at the publishing date because I couldn't believe this was written recently due to the Fat-phobic storyline and use of the R-word multiple times. I put it down for several months because I was bored, then got the audio version and decided to stick with it. It didn't get much better. The audio version sounds like Siri or Alexa is reading it- strange inflections that don't fit the phrasing.
