Way to go Mr. King. On writing a book that I actually enjoyed all the way to the end. I was pleasantly surprised. 3 for 3 of the most recent King works I've read that I enjoyed.
I liked Jamie Conklin he was a believable narrator, The story of his powers wasn't too over the top. I like my character's psychic abilities nice and believable LOL Jamie was a good character overall and his coming of age story was really good. I'd recommend reading it to crime fans and King's older writing style fans.
I liked the diversity of this book but the diverse characters in the diary felt a little forced. Not that it took away from the story, but Nadir who later in the book comes out as a trans man happens to find a diary of an artist her dead mother liked a lot. They also both deal with gender identity issues either directly or indirectly. JUst seemed s little forced to me.
This however did not take away from the writing style which was beautiful.
Soraya is cursed. She can't touch living things except for her flowers, because she is poisonous. One-touch of her green-veined and you would die. She is so afraid of her poison will make her a monster. So she hides in her room and her garden. Trying hard to hide from any bad feelings. She finds a way to get rid of her poison but there are consequences. She is tricked into this by a div, A div is a evil or demon type of character. He appears human until she has gotten rid of the curse. This leads to many consequences as this div wants to take over her country. With her knowledge he tricks her. The rest of the book is about her trying to fix her mistakes.
This is an interesting Persian inspired retelling of a few fairytales. I recommend it if you like retellings.
What if you had memories of things that never happened. For example a husband and child you'd never had. This is what False Memory Syndrome (FMS) is. What if you found out that FMS is the result of time travel.
This book was really interesting. I kept rooting for Helena. It was realistic in the fact that time travel had consequences. What if the time machine got into military hands or a group of people who want to use it for evil?
Good story and great main characters.I'd recommend it to my friends.
This book was a little spooky but mostly over the top when it tried for scares. People seeming dead but actually being in a frozen state. The ghost controlling the weather. These were the two that bothered me the most. Remy was okay but a little too fast at thinking of these people as her friends. I actually would have liked more scares, but overall an okay book with mild scares. Good for a rainy night to add atmosphere to your read.
I feel like Rabbit in Winnie the Pooh cartoon by Disney pondering why he invited Winnie the Pooh into his house. Why oh why did I read this book. I would read an occasional good paragraph or two of random wanderings which is why I powered through in hopes there would be more like those small gleaming nuggets. However they were very few and mostly I was just annoyed with how the book was written. This book has got great reviews so my lower rating will not hurt it, and hey who knows maybe it just wasn't the book for me. I see one of my friends gave it a 5 star rating.
This was overall a good premise and the main storyline was pretty interesting. The romance was boring but I'm usually very picky about how romance is written. The premise though of having a possible pyschopath for a much younger sister is well written as I said. Also second half of the book is much more interesting with that portion than the first.
I really liked this story. It's mostly from the p.o.v of Fabiola an American born citizen who moved back to Haiti when she was a baby but is now back inAmerica with her Matant Jo(aunt) and her three cousins in Detroit. There is no messing with her cousins everyone knows the three B's. It's about love and family and sticking together. Overall a good read.
I feel like I just punished myself by finishing this book. I'm sure other people will like the book and the main character, Eleanor. For me I'm not on board. I couldn't stand Eleanor, I just cringed constantly while reading about her. However I kept expecting the book to get better, and it never did. So... maybe not the book for me.
Oh, Ania, you did a great job on this book. I loved how poor bullied stuttering Stevie loses his cousin/BFF Jude and no one seems to be taking it too seriously because Jude is a troubled boy. Then the authorities find Jude's shirt and everyone assumes like in the past in this creepy little town Jude met the same fate as another little boy years ago who went missing and turned up dead. Stevie is interesting. I was trying to figure him out every second and marveling at how real he seemed.
This book is in three parts the first is getting to know Stevie then getting to know another character who you have no clue what she has to do with Stevie but you (okay I) like her A LOT. The third part is a creepy wonderful tie together of these characters. I did literally have a few moments where I had to stop reading because it was creeping me out. I haven't had a book do that for a while. I thought I knew all the tricks, but Ania plays new tricks that scared me in a good way.
Great story if you like horror and coming of age books.
This book is part fairy tale retelling and magical realism. I love all the characters, but Petey and Roza are the best. When their looks one being incredibly beautiful and the other being “ugly” mixes in with these strong female characters. The main character Finn is really interesting. I knew from an early start what his problem was about not being able to describe the man who took Roza. That may be because I've read a few books both fact and fiction about his problem. The only part I disliked was the fact that to see him as a person he has to do something heroic. Not that I'm discounting his heroic deeds but to stop belittling him by calling him deragatory names he has to “prove” himself “worthy” of kindness and being treated like a normal towns person. Otner tnan that a good fast read.
Gone Girl meets 50 shades both of which I didn't like. A book about abuse and the characters I didn't feel one iota of warmth, worry or anything like you're supposed to when reading about psychological abuse victims in fiction. This book was an almost did not finish but I stuck it out hoping it would eventually not annoy me so much. Alas, it annoyed me until the end.
Still Missing is still my favorite Chevy Stevens book, but I did like this story. I think the domestic abuse angle was well researched. It wasn't typical, but like life everything is different and has some similarities to fit in a label. I did like the mystery aspect a lot, even if I saw it coming earlier.
Good read for those who like thrillers and don't mind time jumps from past to present.
So I finally got around to reading another one of Richard Laymon's books that I had surprisingly not read. This was like watching one of those 80's horror movies where you're yelling at people GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! Of course, this story is about a murder house where there must be more murders, because reasons. We have to kill the neighbors too for good measure.
Enjoyable schlocky splatterpunk fun. Not my favorite Laymon by far but still a nice walk down my memory Laymon Lane.
