This was an interesting thriller with a paranormal overtone. I loved each of the ghosts and their stories. How are these ghosts going to resolve their own murders by the same man? Their search for solutions were fraught with tension but also with despair because they didn't have a big impact on the living world. I especially loved the author's take on what happens to us after we die. It seemed comforting to know how these women would go on after they left the living plane. Overall really good book and I definitely recommend it!
This was such a touching book about families and especially daughters. Mostly it was about familial love which can sometimes be acrimonious but is still love.
I wish I had reread My Heart is a Chainsaw before this book I didn't recognize some of the characters who were in Chainsaw However I still enjoyed the HELL out of this book! It was a real puzzle to figure out who the murderer was in each instance Although you shall never fear Jade Daniels is there to save your butt like the final girl she is
I liked the diversity of this book but the diverse characters in the diary felt a little forced. Not that it took away from the story, but Nadir who later in the book comes out as a trans man happens to find a diary of an artist her dead mother liked a lot. They also both deal with gender identity issues either directly or indirectly. JUst seemed s little forced to me.
This however did not take away from the writing style which was beautiful.
I read Gemma Files short story in a horror collection and loved it. I was hoping for more of that caliber but unfortunately, most of the stories were just okay.
Way to go Mr. King. On writing a book that I actually enjoyed all the way to the end. I was pleasantly surprised. 3 for 3 of the most recent King works I've read that I enjoyed.
I liked Jamie Conklin he was a believable narrator, The story of his powers wasn't too over the top. I like my character's psychic abilities nice and believable LOL Jamie was a good character overall and his coming of age story was really good. I'd recommend reading it to crime fans and King's older writing style fans.
These are my favorite stories
As Red as Blood, as White as Snow by Christina Henry- a darker retelling of Snow White. What if Prince Charming wasn't as charming as advertised? What about that poisoned apple? Great take on an old classic.
Listen by Jen Williams. A new delicious tale with a musical curse that just goes on forever, Great main character.
Faith & Fred by Maura McHugh What a creepy multi-generational curse story, I felt bad for eveyone in this story.
Wendy, Darling by Christopher Golden HOLY CRAP this was a great dark story. My favorite!
Again by Tim Lebbon I've read and enjoyed some of this authoor's other works but this is a story I didn't expect from him. Actually for a curse story it's actually rather beautiful and sweet with a slight twist when you realize what's going on
There are so many layers to this book. I loved them all. It's part horror (but not scary more creepy) and definitely part mystery thriller. Ted was interesting Trying to figure him out was great. I did guess the “twist” when Olivia the cat and Lauren started plotting together. I'm not going to say any more about that though for those who read this and want to be surprised.
I am going to say I loved the book and like many others Olivia the cat is my favorite character.
Okay I'm a sucker for ghost stories. Wanted to see this when it came to theaters, because it looked creepy. It has a creepy Gothic vibe. Edith was interesting but didn't like the insta-love between her and Thomas.
The story is suitably horrific. It's full of lots of creepy moments, and fair warning it is splatterpunk.
I hear there is going to be a 3rd book in this series which makes me happy. Although if this is part of a trilogy I hope that Keira has more of her old memories come back even if it's just how to deal with ghosts; although I would love to know more about who is chasing her and why.
If you like spooky ghost stories you'll definitely like this book.
I reread this because I wanted to refresh my memory before I read the second book in the series. It was still just as good the second time around. I'd forgotten how much I loved Keira, Zoe. Mason and Adage.
This was a good book overall. I'd give it 3.5 stars. The witchy part was the best part IMO. I'm not sure how I feel about the women being unable to really control their magic though. I feel that cheapens the female characters' power. Overall, it's a pretty good book. Would suggest it to those who like stories about witches and about family.
Oh this book was so GOOD! I loved Aubry and trying to figure out what is going on with her disease. I love all her adventures and her time in those mysterious libraries. It's full of magic and adventure. Would recommend to anyone.
A historical fiction book that has spiritualist who are sisters. It also has a Sapphic love story. The author does change character POV about halfway through the story. This book made me feel so bad for Sylvie. I really liked her character. However, Charlotte was slightly unlikeable to me. I don't mind an unlikeable character but she did rub me the wrong
As usual Stephen Graham Jones did a phenomenal job. I liked that it was coming of age and revenge and of course I'm here for the slasher action. Tolly a 17 year old kid who only has one good friend Amber in his small boonies town. They go to a party one night and Tolly gets infected with the slasher bug. Maybe he was a secret slasher all along who knows? He was out for revenge. He had lost countrol of himself and couldn't stop killing those that wronged him. If you like somewhat introspective stories, coming of age stories or slasher stories definitely read this book.
Oh but did this book give me the heebie jeebies. I was nervous the whole time. I was literally talking to the main character about her choices at one point towards the end. Anyway creepy possession story. Again Jennifer McMahon blew it out of the water. Highly recommend to everyone.
This wasn't quite a 4 star book but I did round it up. Overall, this was an interesting book. I liked the mysterious factor of where their sister Avery was. Spoiler I liked that the haunting was actually them in the present haunting their past selves. I know this is a young adult book and I'm not it's target audience, but I did find some things bordering on teen angst.
If you like haunted house books or books that do a slight twist on the stereotypical haunted house I'd suggest this.
Short but what a doozy
This short little story by Joe Hill was actually pretty good. I liked the little nod to how death is inevitable to all and to enjoy life while you can.
This story has ghosts, but they're not creepy or scary. It's a sweet story about a woman who stands out in a small community and her life in it. Dottie is all alone now. Her husband is non-responsive and in a vegetative state, and she goes along with her life until along comes a neighbor girl Magdalena. It's a story how you can feel love for someone even if they're not your family. I will be checking out Candi Sary's other works because this was such a wonderful story.
This was an interesting book. The author's subtle writing on climate change was great IMO. I liked that the family felt that because they were “caretakers” of the bog it would always take care of them, however the bog like any natural thing can only be abused so much before it starts failing. The story is from different POVs of this family. The characters were sometimes sympathetic and sometimes annoying and bordering on unlikable but they were really well written.
I'm really glad I read it. Would recommend.
The ending makes this a 3.5 star book instead of the 3 stars I was originally going to give. This was less of a retelling than I was expecting. There is very little Dorothy Gale. It's more about a female psychologist who gets drawn into Dorothy's orbit after she is accused of murder and sent to an insane asylum. She is drawn because her cousin (conveniently Frank Baum) is a newspaper reporter sent to cover Dorothy's murder trial. The only part I disliked was the “pious” narrator. I wanted to punch them in the nose.
Ghosts, a curse, a cryptid creature, a disaster what else could you want in a middle grade horror? Fun book. I love Josie, Fox, and secondary characters like Mason and Aunt Barb. The family love and the willingness to do the right thing we're good. The paranormal aspects might be a little harrowing for some kids, but I think it had just the right amount of scares for a middle grade reader who enjoys a scary book. I personally would've loved this book when I was the target audience's age (8-12). However at that age I was already reading adult horror so I'm not sure. I probably would have related more to the characters. I really liked it.
Maybe I'd liked this more if I'd read it before My Heart is A Chainsaw. Since I read that epic slasher homage to slasher films this one seemed just okay. It wasn't bad at all but I admit I didn't like it as much.
