Hmm, felt like a pause or taking breadth. The mix of styles - fun experiment which worked for some stories and then distracted for other, interesting. Overall looking forward to getting back to main story.
This is a spoiler or whatever but the way people treat Tara is problematic as hell. And the book said she died of assisted suicide but I think it was more of a murder cause that girl was going THROUGH IT and no one helped. No one bats a lash. ALL the WOC in this series tbh... Jeez what a mess. Also that white girl in Japan trope made me laugh I will not lie.
This is rather disappointing after the high quality of the first two volumes. Each issue in the collection focuses on a different member of the pantheon, showing us something of their background, as well as providing answers to some of the mysteries of the preceding volumes. The writing is good, and it's also good to see more development of some of the characters we have seen relatively little of up to this point. There are also some significant developments in the plot, even if the main focus is elswhere. All of this would have been great had it not been let down by the artwork. Some of it is not quite as good as that in the previous volumes, some of it is different, but on a par in terms of quality, and some of it... well, it's really not to my taste. And sufficiently so to seriously detract from the collection as a whole. Things look like they'll be picking up again in volume 4, though, so here's waiting for that...
This volume was a total mess. I'm not sure what to think because the first two were so promising. Disappointing!
This book was definitely not in the same league as the previous two. Nothing much happened to further the plot.
We did get a little more spotlight on other gods like Tara, Woden, Amaterasu and Sakhmet. I can't say I really liked any of them but I definitely sympathized a lot with Tara. Her story also has a subtext of cyber bullying, online trolling and how that would affect the mental state of teenagers which seemed very realistic. But I definitely didn't like what happened to her. We also get to know a little more about who is committing the murders but the motivations are still unclear.
The artwork in this book was a lot different and I now realize it's due to the guest artists. Though I enjoyed the coloring in Amaterasu's panel set in Japan, I really didn't like the style that was used for Sakhmet's story.
Overall, I am not very impressed with this volume. But I'm definitely going to continue with the series coz I'm totally invested now.
The second volume made me hungry for more. This one made me feel I ate too much. I was disappointed by the change-up in art styles. Some of the turns the characters took made me wonder, “Why are they doing this?” “What is the point in the larger concept that has been established?” And “Who cares?”
I kept re-reading the Wikipedia summary for WicDiv while reading this, which is partly because it had been a long time since I read vol 2 and I didn't remember, and then partly because I think this is meant to be...disjointed? I think it's fun that there are different authors and artists for each of this and I get what it was doing, but probably a more devoted WicDiv fan would get more out of this than I did.
This volume was choppy, but still good. I'm intrigued to see what the devil Ananke is doing with everyone, or is this how she's managed to live forever?
Poor Tara.
Certain issues stood out as my favorites such as issues 11,12,and 14 and I've read them multiple times but there a more issues that I just read once and set them to the side. I enjoyed the stories for sure, I always enjoy the timeline building in this series (even thou5the end of 17 is going to drive my crazy until March) but they didn't feel as fulfilling as the others in this arc. Either way I can't wait (seriously I don't think I'll make it!) until the new arc next year and I'm looking forward to continuing with this great series.
