The plot and characters in this one come off a bit too straight-forward or cookie-cutter and the story beats do very little to separate things from that which we've seen before. While the writing doesn't ‘pull its punches' and moves at a solid pace, many of the reveals (and even the ending) feel a bit lackluster or even moderately predictable. This leaves very little mystery and intrigue until some over-the-top motivations are haphazardly revealed at the very end. Even the main premise, while efforting to be grandiose with its adjacent story threads, falls a little flat when the main event is centered around robbing someone while they sleep.
3 1/2 rounded up. Fairly predictable plot, some one dimensional characters (besides Cassie and March), and a lot more violent than my usual reads, but Michael Connelly sure knows how to tell a story. I listened to the audiobook and the time just flew by! Very entertaining despite the flaws mentioned above. Maybe because I'm going to Vegas next week myself...
