Probably this is more fun if you like romantasy more than I do.
I enjoy stories with two POV but there was no signal for who was the focus of each new chapter - which was fine while it was usually trading off with each new chapter, but then got a tad jarring when it switched to longer passages from each perspective.
I liked the snarkiness and enemies to lovers trope is fine, but the prince just seems dumb for not figuring out her identity sooner. The romance itself seemed slapped on because of course there had to be romance, not fleshed out so it'd be believable. It dragged by the middle, I nearly DNF'd.
Ik heb me vermaakt!
Adoro o universo, adoro a estrutura do mundo, adoro o lore. A melhor adaptação d'A pequena Sereia de sempre.
A escrita é maravilhosa. Eu ouvi e li este livro e é deliciosa. Simples, acessível, mas poética, lírica. O equilíbrio perfeito entre ação e descrição, diálogo e narração.
Adoro, adoro, adoro.
This was an entire... ride and experience to read and finish this book. I should've just gone and marked it as dnf. I rolled my eyes so hard throughout this novel
The writing was mediocre and I didn't feel attached enough to the characters. My first thoughts were that this may be a dystopia retelling of The Little Mermaid and I was right. The story was mostly boring and I had to really push myself to continue to flip the pages and read on. I wish the author would've provided more substance and context on why certain characters were the way they were or felt the way they did. Everything was very surface level, maybe that's why I couldn't connect to the characters, specifically the protagonists. Not a book I'm glad to have finished.
The 2 stars is me being generous. It was just so meh, I was finding excuses not to have time to read it. This year, I will DNF the books that I don't enjoy and won't be pushing myself to finish everything.
This surprised me how much I liked it
Would want more development between the two love interests and I'd love to see more of the crew just hanging out and having fun
But a good fun easy read.
“Technically, I'm a murderer, but I like to think that's one of my better qualities.”
One of my favorite dual pov books because of how awesome both the protagonists were. I listened to the audiobook and it was so good! I think going into this blindly made me enjoy it more. I kinda wished there was more romance but I loved the dynamic between the main characters.
Oh thank God the ending didn't disappoint me. I loved the banter! We travelled to too many kingdoms that I didn't bother about. Also would've liked more backstory on Madrid and Kye. But hey, this book did it's best in the limited pages it had. Very enjoyable
This was not it for me. Maybe it was the writing style, maybe it were the characters or just the story line. I couldn't be bothered about it. It didn't hold my attention at all and I felt like dnf'ing most of the time, but I powered through it, because it was such a short and fast read.
Now, I kinda wish I did dnf :')
This was a YA fantasy through and through, enemies to lovers, banter, yearning, the whole thing.
Ridiculous amounts of sarcastic back and forth, but I was into it, mostly because I really get into the ‘you'd hate me if you knew who I really was' thing.
The plot was pretty mediocre overall, but I flew through the book and enjoyed every second of it, so I didn't really mind.
I hate dual POVs though and this didn't change my mind, they both sound exactly the same too so that didn't help either.
But I got my romance fix with a fun world built around it and that's all I ask for!
[MY RATING] 9.5/10
[SOME SPOILERS AHEAD IN CHARACTER + OVERALL SECTION]
[PLOT, WRITING, WORLD-BUILDING & PACING]
- writing this review like a year after i read it cos i never had time to write a review sooo
- THIS WAS A GEM OF AN ENEMIES TO LOVERS NOVEL.
- I absolutely ADORED the witty banter, high stakes and amazing chemistry between our lovely siren killer & prince killer
- i loved the premise, the worldbuilding, the lore, the romance... everything about this was perfect and i loved it so much.
- will re-read when i have time because this was delicious (and rewrite another review!)
The story was good. The main characters were likeable, once I got used to them. The world was very interesting, though not fleshed enough for my liking.
The writing style wasn't the best though. The author tried hard to sound profound and it didn't land most of the time.
Overall, a good retelling that would probably be appealing to its intended audience.
I was hoping it would be a dark and twisted retelling since the author uses siren instead of mermaid, but... I mean it was okay but it didn't exceed my expectations.
The beginning was brilliant. So clever.
But then they got to the ice kingdom and it all just... broke. Like sea foam. So disappointing. :-(
But, happy ending. Everyone got what they wanted. Love, love, peace, peace, and confetti. Yay.
Yawn.
