I didn't know much about Vonnegut, having only read Cat's Cradle previously (and, I think in highschool, at that (boy, I'm old)), so took me a while to realize the autobiographical bits were truly autobiographical. Kinda wish it were pure memoir+musings, but the weaving in of fiction was a fun device, I suppose.
i'll tell you what, tho.. seems like he has a rep for being curmudgeonly, or something? i dunno, I get a lot of heart from this guy. just another disappointed sensitive soul seeking light.
I enjoyed this a lot but it is a very, very strange book. It's based conceptually on a novel that Vonnegut started and didn't like, but that story is mixed in with an introspective sort-of memoir. It's a rambling sort of book, and you should not go in expecting a tightly plotted story.
Read this to see a bunch of Vonnegut's disjointed thoughts on life and hear his anecdotes and perspectives.
This felt less like a book, and more like having a conversation with Vonnegut. Which I really liked having. I don't think anyone could get away with having Timequake as their first novel, but coming from Vonnegut, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
