This book was honestly such a hard let down for me. Coming off the the very abrupt ending to the first book I was expected the speed to continue on into this second book. It did not. In fact even though there was a strict due date to this book it seemed the majority of it was spent with the characters not doing much of anything. The level of the relationships also seemed very off to me. It seems some of the ‘doing nothing' time could have been used to make the depth of the relationships seem more believable. Super bummed this book did not live up to the first
I loved the setting of book one and this one focused more on relationships. It was what the duology needed even though I didn't love it.
I really liked This Poison Heart, so rating the sequel this low is really disappointing. My favourite things about the first book were the mysterious gothic atmosphere, the sense of discovery with Briseis's powers, and the family relationship and all of those things are basically abandoned in book 2 for a boring Greek mythology inspired adventure story. The romance is so bland that I kept forgetting the two characters were together but then they'd kiss and it was a bit jarring. The members of Briseis's birth family were not well integrated into the story, and the ending the LI gets didn't feel earned to me.
