Found it difficult to feel connected to or invested in a main character who doesn't really know herself or what she's doing.
3.75. something i've learned about me is I really enjoy time travel mixed with themes of family/relationships. so wholesome with a good balance of fun and sad.
also loved the acknowledgements
3.5. It was a lot of fun to read this. It had the right amount of silly plot, charming characters, and heartwarming/sad moments. I don't know what I expected, but this wasn't exactly what I had in mind. This is ultimately a story about accepting some unchangeable facts of life and appreciating the moments we have while we have them. It made me cry, it made me laugh, and was a quick and easy read. What holds it back from a higher rating was that the overall plot and messages felt a bit predictable. It won't change your life, but I did like it. A good comfort read if your idea of comfort is a good cry (which it is for me!).
A love letter from the author to her father, novelist [a:Peter Straub 6941 Peter Straub https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1200468903p2/6941.jpg], who passed away in 2022. The first 25% is slow, but once 40 year old Alice time travels back to her 16th birthday, the book becomes more engaging. The most memorable character is Ursula the cat, whose behavior is delightfully consistent in any time period.
Tomorrow is Alice's fortieth birthday. She's not happy but she's not unhappy. She has an apartment, a job, a best friend. But her dad is in the hospital, dying.
Alice wakes up the next morning to find she is sixteen, and suddenly Alice wonders, What would happen if...
Now wasn't this a fun ride?! Time travel. Doing things differently and seeing what happens. What's important in life. A delight.
There are silly parts but overall I liked it. It's a sweet story and a look at friendship and parents. The cat is 24+ and there's time travel so there are goofy bits but i love the best friend and the dad-daughter relationship.
I checked this out of the library after reading her wonderful Twitter thread about her Dad. It's a thought-provoking, beautiful journey which has me thinking a lot about my relationship with my own daughter. “Until the future.”
This was a fun listen. I like time travel stories, and this added a compelling father-daughter story. Some people were bothered by the cat who lives a LONG time, but that added to the magic for me. I also enjoyed the bond between the two school girls and then adult women.
