I didn't like it but I didn't hate it either. It was just there. The relationship was weak and I didn't feel the chemistry between the main couple. The author did a lot of “tell don't show” which I'm not a fan of and didn't dwell into their minds as she should. I wanted to see their motivations and feelings, but the author focused on what they did in every day life instead of focusing on their relationship. Like “next Tuesday they did blah blah blah” instead of showing how they felt during that weekend apart , how they coped, etc
I didn't like the use of pov either. I usually like the dual pov but only when it's one chapter from character's a perspective, the other from character b. But here? The perspective changed every few paragraphs and even there there was a time jump. Within one chapter. I didn't like it at all.
This was cringy as heck. If you are looking for a romance with 0 smut/ spice this one is probably for you. Not much else to say about this one!
The drama wasn't really drama-ing and the romance wasn't really romancing for me, sorry
Cute but didn't engage me enough to want to continue with the series. The writing style didn't fully engage me, and although you could say the relationship conflict was realistic, it wasn't interesting enough to feel romantic or special (hero has commitment issues for no discernible reason).
fun read but like....hm - some...questionable plot details
but it was a cute enough story, if a lil toooo on-the-nose twds the end
A nice, quick read when you want to escape and not think too hard. It felt like a chick flick in book form, and I was totally ok with that. It doesn't go very deep into potential problems of being in an interracial relationship, which again, I was ok with because it's not always as frought as the movies would have you believe, going off my own personal experience. I read this in the winter, but this would be a perfect Beach Read option.
I heard some rave reviews over this book and it seemed super popular, so I decided to give it a review. I am not in love with this book, but there were definitely cute moments. I honestly loved Alexa and think she is the best and unfortunately, I think she deserves better than Drew. This is one of those rare times when I really don't like the main dude.
Drew has some serious anger problems that no one comments on. Weird outbursts of anger at his friends, then calms down so they can talk, but the friends don't comment on it???
Yet, the rest of the story is so cute. Alexa does inform Drew of his privileged mindset and he does learn from it (so he isn't a total asshole). Alexa is a super strong character and does what she believes in and in this case, it is helping at-risk youth. I learned from Alexa and I can only hope I can be as awesome as her. I teared up towards the end for her victories.
So, I do recommend this to people who like romances. I enjoyed reading it and loved reading about Alexa. I'll be on the lookout for more of this author's works.
Meh. The first quarter of this book was good. All the “fake girlfriend wedding date” stuff was great. And then there's three quarters of a book to fill with cliched misunderstandings and forced conflict so that something actually happens. Yawn.
An easy, quick read...pretty much just fine. I have trouble with romance novels because I don't really enjoy when the main focus of a book is romance. I prefer a larger story with some romance in it as a secondary thing. So why do I read books like this, you ask? I have no idea. Probably to escape reality. So yeah.. wouldn't read again but didn't absolutely hate it.
This was really fun with great characters! I so appreciate Alexa's commitment to purse snacks.
This wasn't the book for me. I enjoyed reading about the heroine's job as a mayor's chief of staff and her arts rehabilitation program for teens. I also loved the side character's Maddie, Carlos, and Lauren but we only get to see Lauren in the beginning of the book and then never again. I did not like the hero Drew (I thought he was an ass most of the time) and yeah this one wasn't for me.
(Full disclosure: the author is a friend.) This book is so much fun, like a perfect Netflix rom-com in written form (the best recent rom-coms I've seen were on Netflix, that is completely a compliment). I loved how Alexa had a job that mattered to her just as much as Drew's and I loved that the climactic scene took all that into account. So good, so satisfying, fizzy and fun.
A quick read, but there's not much of a plot. Basically 300 pages of two people who really like touching each other but suck at talking to one another. It's probably just not the genre for me.
mmm I was pretty late to the party in reading this but I did read it awhile ago and apparently never added it to GoodReads? This shit is why I'm behind on my GoodReads challenge, stop yelling at me, website
anyway it was a sweet, fun read with a great protagonist to root for!
I had heard a lot about this book across Booktube and the Twitterverse before it's release, so it definitely went on my TBR. But I also lowered my expectations because I had a feeling it wouldn't be very “earth-shattering”. I am happy that it didn't disappoint. The Wedding Date is based on the all familiar trope of fake relationship to falling in love and it is sweet, charming, flirty and enjoyable. It also has smart MCs who have their own loves with friends apart from their romantic life and I liked getting to know them on thie own turf.
There are some elements though that definitely stand out in the story which really made the reading experience wonderful. It's an interracial romance, which is probably my first ever such contemporary read. It allows for a couple of interesting discussions about race between Alexa and Drew and it was great to see him acknowledge his white privilege and also realising that he had never thought about how things could be different from her perspective. Alexa does get a little insecure about her weight but for most of the book, I loved that she was confident, owned her body and really enjoyed her food. Ohhh God..... all the fast food they consumed definitely made me very very hungry 🙂 🙂 However, the best part of the book for me was that both of them had busy ambitious careers in different parts of the state and try to meet when they can on weekends, but never even consider that one of them may have to compromise professionally to make a life together.
This is a happy, feel good romance with wonderful characters that can be enjoyed in a single sitting, just don't go in with a lot of expectations.
So delightful! Not only was this an interracial romance (YES!), our heroine is so completely herself and so real about all the things we say in our heads when we are starting a new relationship. On top of that, her body was real and her appetite was real. AMAZING. Alexa and Drew were constantly eating - happily and with gusto. I loved this book from start to finish and can't wait to read Jasimine Guillory's next one!
So sweet and funny and FUN to read! Of course (old crotchety married lady here) I'm gonna say that half their problems could have been solved if they'd just had a conversation but it's hard to hold that against this book, because it made for some of the most heartfelt moments, and also some of the best get-a-grip-friend moments. (Can the next book be about Carlos?)
