The Shepherd's Tale

Definitely not the story I'd imagined.

Again only for the die hard fans of the series, this one is a well crafted look at Shepherd Book. It starts nicely ted into the movie and then flash backs done differently give a nice insight on the man who was always a bit of an enigma. Recommended for fans!

This is just a short graphic novel. I've wanted to read it for awhile, but the first edition went out of print when I tried to buy it and then I ended up forgetting about it.

A friend of mine got it from the library and let me borrow it from him before he read it.

I always wanted to know the deal with Book, and one of the most frustrating parts of the movie was they didn't explore that at all.

This book is a bit of a mixed bag. The story and art is good. I liked the way they transitioned back to different times of Book's life.

However it was very short, and while it confirmed some things I suspected, it mostly added to my questions rather than answering them. I would have liked some kind of short video format, or a novella to the graphic novel simply to get a more detailed back story.

Worth checking out if you're a firefly fan though.

I love the way Zack brought you back in time bit by bit.

I was almost hesitant to read this one... Book is an incredible character and pondering his back story is sort of a natural part of my life in the fandom. Now that it's resolved for me (yes, very late in the game. I told you I was hesitant), I find my own versions were a bit more complex. I liked some of the smaller stories, and I liked the backwards story-telling, but the actual resolution/beginning left me really wishing this could have been an episode in the tv series. It could have packed a lot more punch.

Disappointing story; inconsistent with the series; and the narrative gimmick didn't work for me.
