I was enthralled by this chilling tale until the last two chapters. I didn't like that the story essentially made this alternate timeline converge back with our own. I was much more interested in seeing the longer term ramifications of this excellent scenario. Alas, it ended with a whimper for me.

Terrifying and heartbreaking. It's shocking to think that this was written 15 years ago, because it could easily be talking about today. It's a warning for what America could easily and quickly become. I'm some ways, we are already there.

On the one hand, Roth's writing style is out of fashion. On the other hand, this book is scarily prescient. It can't happen here? Trump's election proves that it can. We must be vigilant against fascism.

Despite intriguing premise and its relevance to current affairs, I found myself bored by it.

I like Philip Roth so I had higher expectations for this book. He kept bringing the reader to the edge of terror and then backing down. Still a scary “what-if” scenario.

Um, this book was interestingly researched and kind of an interesting idea, but it just... was not that good.
