I am a Janus, and I can't wait to find out what that means! (I have a slight feeling that it's a good thing...) Quite fun - how can one resist being drawn in to a world-traveling treasure hunt, complete with hidden clues for the reader to find, that spans across multiple platforms, and has spies, explosions, betrayals, and pain au chocolat. I'm game.
It's like Da Vinci Code for kids, without the blasphemy. I wasn't expecting much but Maze of Bones is a fun read. The main characters have a pretty typical sibling relationship, which works since the main focus is the puzzle solving. They have a lot of clue-chasing rivals and I had a little trouble keeping track of them all.
I'm a little concerned at how long this series is going to be. This book only gets through the first clue. If this becomes a 39-book series, I'm out.
Read with my son. He loved it, would give it 5 stars. I thought it was okay gave it three stars so the average is 4 stars. His favorite part was when they were in the bell tower. He wants to fly with a kite but he doesn't want to be the bad guy. Excited to read the next one.
The plot is reminiscent of that of [b:The Westing Game 902 The Westing Game Ellen Raskin http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1312497590s/902.jpg 869832] which is on my short list of Best Books of All Time. Unfortunately, this one draws everything out too slowly, especially for the number of clues there are in the game. It just seems like it was hastily written and I want to trust that everything is going to wrap up nicely at the end of this LENGTHY series, but I'm just not sure. I will say that the ending was fairly epic. It was a fast and easy read and the end left me wondering, so I probably will not drag my feet in getting the next in the series.
I know it's a children's book, but I thought it was really nice to read a book without romance for a change. I like romance books, but sometimes it is nice with a short break.
