Starts strong, but quickly devolves into messy road-trip soup where things just happen.
classico.
So my experience with this franchise was an interesting one, I started with the two movies, read the books when I was in 4th grade and now I'm rereading them as a sophomore in college for nostalgia and the new series coming out,
I have to say this book is fantastic but everything happens so quickly, I read most of it over the course of one day but also that might be because they are kids books lol, overall a fantastic book and I've already started sea of monsters (side note is it weird I find ares hot lol)
This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid, so I was pretty devastated by how much I disliked this book this time around.
First off, I feel I did no favors for Rick Riordan by reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone right before this... They are eerily similar and Percy Jackson is unmistakably the weakest of the two by a significant margin.
I'm a certified hater and with that already acknowledged— The Lightning Thief is just lazily written. Grover and Annabeth are basically just Ron & Hermione coded and even Percy lacks much substance...
In regard to the story, not much honestly happens. After the quest begins, it felt like the characters were simply just wandering around waiting for something to happen. Their encounters were random and lacked any sense of threat.
Worst of all was the finale. What the fuck was that? The betrayal from Luke was so haphazardly thrown together. Dude was fine and all the sudden he's an asshole? And of course, he's the villain that does the whole “I'm the villain and FINE I'll tell you my whole plan” routine... Ugh, just so frustrating that the ending was so messy.
From my memory, I think I remember feeling that the series gets better after each book— I really hope that's the case because this book has set such a low bar.
7/10
Fun, but a bit simple.
This feels almost like a Harry Potter reskin to me. Hopefully the depth and seriousness increase throughout the series in the same way as HP.
increíble, la forma en la que narra Percy es muy divertida, sin duda Percy, Grover y Annabeth son mi trío de amigos favoritos del momento
Loved the mix of real-world elements and Greek mythology. I really enjoyed the quest and seeing how the monsters blended into places around the country. Medusa and The Lotus Hotel were my favorites.
Rick Riordan (specifically the Percy Jackson/Olympians series) has been a part of our household for many years. E, especially, loved this series. I'm pretty sure he's read everything there is to read in this particular world (and it's a fair amount) and I don't even want to know how many times he has re-read them.
So, anyway, when I found a podcast that was going through and discussing the books, I decided it was time I actually read them for myself! One book in and I'm enjoying them. Although I have to admit, a decent part of my enjoyment I think comes from connecting with something important to my kid and maybe a little less of just me enjoying it. Upsides include lots of humor, and lots of good action. It is definitely YA, though, and while that's not a bad thing I think I'm missing a bit of depth. I'll be interested to see if it grows up as the series goes on (much in the way that the Harry Potter series ages/deepens as the books go on).
Amazing book
I like when a book comes to the point and does not spend 3 pages on what color the sky had
The action is quick and you feel like you're in the battle
The 3 main characters are very likeable
I can't wait to start the next book in this series
Great book, I wish I would have read this a long time ago when I was in middle school but I am happy that I read it. I can't wait for my son to read it. I'm not big on reading Greek myths. But this made me want to read more Greek myths books. The sort of twist at the end was fantastic!
a very nice break from my horrid rotation of books lately. very nostalgic and nice to have a reminder of how much i really enjoy reading
for some reason I never read this as a kid, but I get it now, and I'm super excited for the tv show :D Going to try to finish the book series before the show comes out (and yes I did watch the movies years ago but we don't talk about that)
it's gotta be a good book to make u commit to reading 10+ more but by god he's done it!
I grew up on this series and came back to it while in a reading slump as a way to have a quick read to keep up with my yearly goal. Rick Riordan's intelligent writing stands the test of time 18 years later. Percy's sarcastic 12 year old voice is still relatable to me as a 22 year old. The book continues to be as clever as it is adventurous and I think anyone who enjoys reading YA would enjoy this book. The ability that Riordan has to adapt the classic myths we know and love and put them through a modern lense is unmatched in my opinion.
A fantastic story well written and steeped in Greek mythology. I truly enjoyed this adventure with Percy and his friends. I would say this is primarily story driven, but I found I liked the characters and enjoyed seeing them come to life.
One of the classic YA fantasy novels, and one that's very close to my heart. Great characters and very inventive world of mythology come to life.
Age range: 10+
Younger readers may find it a little scary.
This read was dedicated to my younger self who never had a Percy Jackson phase... I really wish I did because I know I would have been completely obsessed. This book was not written for my age but it was enjoyable none the less. Yes its on the simple side, but the story and the characters are just as well drawn out as any adult book. I can now understand why everyone hated the original movie, the book (as always) was so much better
This book is full of loveable characters, thrilling quests, and Greek lore worthy of exciting anybody no matter what age they are. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the story pans out (but not intended).
This a really fun mix of Clash of the Titans and Ender's Game. It rockets along at a great pace and uses the Greek mythology characters really well. Can't wait to see the movie now!
