DNF at about page 100. The writing was fine but I guess Greek mythology just isn't my thing.
This would probably be more enjoyable if I'd read the book first. On its own, it's way too fast paced and jumpy. But it seems adequate at delivering the story in short order. Not a fan of the art.
As always, I had a blast reading this book and found myself looking at the characters this time. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 20 but I can still see a lot of similarities between 12-year-old me and 12-year-old Percy Jackson. If I'm being totally honest I think I still see some of him in my almost 22-year-old self. Revisiting Rick's world is always a wonderful treat and I look forward to reading book 2.
reading this is weird after having watched the movie lol, i'm so excited for the tv series tho <3
If you like greek mythology or want to like it, you will most likely enjoy this.
I read it first more than 10 years ago and after this re-read I remember why I loved it so much back then.
Of course, there were a lot of conveniences and the power balance wasn't very clear, but given that this is a middle grade book , I can forgive all this.
It was a great time and I can't wait to continue with the series.
I found this to be a fun read. I was familiar with enough Greek mythology to recognize characters and guess at some of the story and I thought that some of the ways the old Greek characters were integrated into a modern setting were very clever. It seemed like a good start of the series, and I hope to enjoy the next one as well.
this book was BORING!!! this is most definitely made for kids... the writing was bland.. did not even feel nothing for the characters whatsoever!
This middle grade is loved by everybody but sadly it wasnt for me.
I liked this book, but I feel like I would have liked it a lot more if I had read it years ago. I will definitely read the second book in the series, but I'm not sure if I will continue with the series after that.
I'm not going to get into the plot of this because at this point everyone knows the general premise of this book through societal osmosis.
I have never read this series. Growing up, I was a huge fan of another mg/ya magical school story. But lately, my love for said other series is waning due to the author's hateful views. I've been eyeing this series as a possible series to fall in love with that has a similar vibe. I won't be able to recreate the nostalgia, but maybe I can find something to read to my kids one day. When I heard about the tv show on Disney+ that was announced, I decided now was the time.
I'm glad I finally did! This book was so fun. The characters are all so endearing, and the lore and plot are so interesting. The Greek mythology basis set in the modern world is very fun. It also allowed for a certain familiarity with the mythological creatures and beings, which made the story that much more cool. I have heard from friends and reviewers that these books mature as Percy gets older, and I'm very excited for that. While there were serious stakes in this book, the characters are only 11, so everything was a little whimsical and reads very young. I knew this going in, so it didn't bother me. I can't wait to watch these characters grow!
TW: abusive parent, death, murder
My frame of reference for the quality of the book is kinda wack because I saw the movie first. I also read along with a podcast chapter by chapter, which is very fun and also agonising. I don't absolutely love it, though I think much of that had to do with the fact that it definitely was a 2005 kinda book.
The story was great although I don't love how fast-paced it was. Because of that, the ending was very anticlimactic and underwhelming. It's mostly just conversations. I know there are 4 more books and I don't know if I will get that far but I am certainly reading along with the podcast until I finish the second book.
Probably would have liked it a lot better when I was younger. I started this series much too late, but I'm still excited to see what Rick Riordan has in store with the next books
Fast paced with witty humor but I would've appreciated it more if I was 11. 3.5 stars rounded up
Tenía pendiente esta saga hace mucho.
Y no se por que no la había leído antes!
Me encantó este primer libro, ya con ganas de leer los demás
I wish I had read this about fifteen years ago. Today this is an example of the American sense of superiority. It takes the mythos of the Greek pantheon and makes it all American. The seat of Olympus is in New York City of course! I never felt like the book had much respect for the mythos. All of it is just a ‘Greek gods but in America'. Dionysius is Mr. D. because he's hip with the kids.
I also disliked Hades being portrayed as evil. He is, according to the mythos, a keeper of the dead. The god of death is Thanatos! Hades is the Christian Devil here and that annoys me.
Percy's quest is also nonsense and filled with so much luck it's hard to like.
I loved the characters though. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are fantastic.
3.5 stars
It's a good introduction on getting people interested in Greek mythology. Has enjoyable characters, monsters, and adventure. Some of the humor wasn't for me, and the middle dragged on a bit, but I liked it well enough.
Even though the target audience is clearly much younger than I am I really enjoyed the story and the humor put into it
¿Me encantó?
