this was just so slow and not helping my slump but i plan on spinnin the block and coming back to this
The Getaway is a commentary(?) set in a dystopian world. The commentary bit of the book is pretty in-your-face, but it isn't such a big deal if the book is good, right? Too bad it isn't. When I was reading, it felt like things just happened for the sake of happening. Someone would get shot for shock factor, someone would get electrocuted for shock factor, someone would break a limb for shock factor, etc. The book fully relies on a shock factor in an attempt to use some social commentary, but both aspects fall flat and decrease the book's quality.
This YA thriller was trying to do a lot of different things, to varying degrees of success, but overall I had fun. It felt like it fizzled out a bit by the end though. If you like retail horror (eg. Horrorstör) or socially conscious thrillers (eg. When No One Is Watching) you will probably enjoy it.
Absolutely LOVED the vibes of the first third. Working at a theme park it was great to see the parallels of Karloff Country!!!! The second half got too weird and convoluted for me.
Wow! There is so much to brag on in this book. The way this community is set up feels like it could be real. The extreme customer service and paying for a good trip also felt realistic. So the creepy feeling to go along with these realistic elements added so much tension to the reading. I loved the ads and announcements in between the chapters. The audiobook sets these apart with some sounds and a voice. That part becomes increasingly creepy as the story goes on because we see what is announced is vastly different than the lived experience. As Jay, Connie, Zeke, and Chelle try to find safety in this new dystopian world, they keep finding out more and more secrets. It is hard to know who to trust because so many people are holding on to secrets.
So good and so creepy. I definitely want to check out some more YA horror!
