This is a lovely little book. I recommend doing it daily, as it is meant to be thought provoking and think about the daily passages. Holiday does a great job making Stoicism approachable to the average person here. If you can stomach this and get anything of value out of it, I recommend his other works on Stoicism.
Fantastic book! It took me 2 months more to finish than the prescribed regime of 1 page a day, but it was all worth it. I love how Ryan Holiday for every entry reinterprets the Stoics by explaining them through contemporary examples and anecdotes. I'll start rereading the book again now to absorb these lifelong lessons even more!
For all those who want a little bit of concentrated stoicism every day.
This book was a game-changer for me.
Ryan's short and modern explanations make Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus passages really easy to understand. It's a perfect introduction to Stoicism as jumping straight to Meditations could be overwhelming and possibly discouraging.
Type of book you can (and should) re-read many times.
I question the quality of the translation, but I do understand that many of these needed to be written in the most approachable and modern voice possible. There are nuggets of wisdom, but not so much that I'd spend a full year pondering each one.
I can understand some of the one- and two-star reviews: there is a good amount of repetition; the chosen quotes from the ancients barely scratch the surface of their work; the authors' explanations do not always improve on the original quotes. And yet... more often than not the repetition helps reinforce the key ideas, at least for this neophyte, the quotes are well chosen for the most part, and the modern-day examples are a useful - at times alleviating - counterpart to some of the (perfectly forgivable) archaisms.
Can't say I finished it, as not a full year has passed since publication, but I doubt that my review will change.
Fantastic book that's become part of my morning routine giving me daily food for thought and often a journalling inspiration.
Highly recommended for anyone who finds Stoicism fascinating

Very solid book, and full of easy one-page reads per day to give you bits of wisdom. Lots of the topics and quotes from the different stoic philosophers, mimic quite a bit from The book of Proverbs in the Bible. However, the modern day “translation” and examples that Ryan provides from the stoic philosophers helps apply it to our everyday lives. 3.5/5
