For a memoir set firmly in the early half of the 20th century, “The Copenhagen Trilogy” struck me as shockingly modern in Tove Ditlevsen's spare narration and her refusal to equivocate about her ambitions & invite anyone else's pity, least of all her own. It does not make for easy reading — sometimes, it felt like I was staring at a house with neither windows nor doors. In this case, however, the difficulties are worth it.
