While I was away in Florida my husband bought this book for me because he remembered it from his childhood. I'm pretty sure I have read this before as a kid but of course I didn't remember it, so I was glad to have it to read now. I am definitely not the target audience for this book. As an adult reading it, I thought it was ok. But for kid I think it would make a fun read whether you're reading it with them, or they are reading it themselves. I also think it can be used to teach kids some great lessons while at the same time having a little bit of fun.
I was anti-Seuss for my whole life, without ever having actually read any of it. But I had seen Grinch stuff and this cat in my peripheral vision sprinkled throughout the culture, and I just hated the aesthetic and didn't get the vibe. Not my jam, okay!!
Well, these books cycle through our neighborhood Little Free Libraries and so they end up in our house. And I ended up reading it to my kid. And, okay, it was a lot of fun. Kid was entranced. I kinda loved the rhythm and the vibe. Apparently it IS my jam. I love anxiety fish. I love the chaos neutral cat. I love that the mother's return is greeted with extreme horror and anxiety. I love that you don't SEE the mother's face (this drives my kid crazy - “WHERE IS SHE?! WHY SHE NO COME INSIDE?!”).
I love the cat's voice. Oh, what a shame, what a shame, what a shame.

The Cat in the Hat es un libro que de ninguna forma lo hubiera leído si no hubiera visto la pelicula, o hubiera tenido el conocimiento de que Dr. Seuss es un autor de selección en países anglosajones (en literatura infantil).
Más allá de que no tiene muchas palabras, esté libro es muy alegre. Mientras lo leía pensaba en lo divertida que eran las imágenes y en lo parecido que era con la película. El papel del Pez se me hizo como la vez de la conciencia (Super yo) y el gato como todo lo placentero (Ello), hasta que al final del libro se juntan en un Yo que limpia todo el desastre. Se me hace muy divertido pensarlo así, y también interesante.
Fuera de que es un libro que a los niños les puede gustar muchísimo más de lo que yo lo disfruté, me pareció que era algo original, y aun más amé el tipo de lírica que utiliza.

Nice children book of rhymes. Only the Czech translation sometimes lacks originality and the right rhyme. But the illustrations are beautiful.
I recall reading part of this years ago in a doctor's office and being shocked by how crazy it was. This weekend I read it at storyline at work, and recalled all over again why I didn't like it. This cat comes in where he isn't even welcome and destroys all sorts of things, but claims to be bringing “fun”?? Wow...not my version of fun. My favorite was the fish, who kept being wiser than the rest...that part was the closest it came to funny, but only because the fish survived being away from water that long.
Wow. This was bad. I had never read any of Dr. Seuss's writings and decided to started with this famous book. Reading this as an adult, I must say that it was just awful. I'm not sure if it is the writing or the tone. I am glad that I didn't read this as a child, this felt more like a confusing, horrific story than anything else. This story would probably scare me as a child rather than teach me anything. As for the question at the end, there isn't a right answer. If you were to tell your parents what happened, they would assume that you are lying and if you tell them that nothing happened, then you would be lying to yourself.

Love! She seemed slightly interested as I couldn't help but read some parts really rather fast!
Dr. Seuss' classic picture book is probably the first book I read out loud, on my own. It was really the book that helped me start to speak well. I remember my mom would read this one to me and I would try to speak the words over her until she just gave up and let me read it myself. I was really little, but I can still remember pointing at the words on the pages and trying to sound them out. Then I would go about the house saying “cat”, “hat”, “thing 1” and other words. The Cat In The Hat is a great children's book: it has funny pictures, an engaging story, easy words, rhyming, and it flows very well. Children will love it. Even adults will love it! I still enjoy picking it up and reading it to my younger cousins. It is such a fun book and so funny to children, who maybe hope that a cat in a hat will appear in their house to help them with their chores every time their parents leave them home alone!

Being raised in Mexico I've never had the chance to truly read and experience the work of Dr. Seuss, (was he a medical doctor like Patch Adams? [joke]); so now I give that opportunity to my 13 month old son, he likes the experience of turning the pages.
The book certainly sells the illusion of childhood, of imaginary and magical friends who come when parents are gone and do nothing but mischief and using the same devices as they arrived revert everything to the status-quo they find he things in the first place.
I loved the rhythm and the confusion from Thing two and one, great book which should be in every child's library.
I can't wait for my son to begin enjoying the illustrations and reading of these books.
Read this to my daughter I think she enjoyed Thing 1 and Thing 2. Didn't know this Cat was terrible until after reading. Still enjoyed it though.
