In all the honesty the first half isn’t that great. It’s not terrible by any means, but it is primarily comedy focused with bill cipher doing various bits and very minimal world building. It’s still fun with its codes but it isn’t nearly as interesting as journal 3. The second half is a lot more interesting as it delves into bill ciphers origin, however I did feel a lot of it was kinda explained in the show and other material and felt it could’ve been developed a little more. The stuff about bill ciphers previous hosts was also pretty hit or miss as I simply didn’t care about many of the characters and their story. The final quarter is by far the strongest aspect of the book, it gives brand new journal entries from ford that better describe the actual bond bill cipher and Stanford actually has and adds way more depth to their dynamic. It also gives an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the show and arguably makes the finale even more impactful. The book is far from perfect but it is amazing to see Alex hirsch return to this franchise, it’s also nice to see all the cryptic codes return with some brand new ones alongside them. The book can be lacking in story but it is fairly funny at times and it doesn’t present a very strong ending that helps conclude the entire show. Again not perfect but I’m so glad this exists, really hope hirsch will make journal 1 & 2 now.
A delight for gravity falls fans - nicely fleshes out characters that were not fully detailed in the show creating a larger picture of gravity falls by using Bill's perspective.
