Swastika Night

It's incrdible this book was written when it was written. Adressing cleverly all of the bullshit that was told about women throughout history and disassembling all the excuses for and ways of misogyny. Hope this book gets more recognition, as it's the perfect predecessor for Brave New World or Handmaid's Tale.

Voilà une oeuvre atypique ! En lisant le résumé, qui nous parle d'une Europe dominée par l'Allemagne nazie depuis sept siècles, on pourrait croire qu'il s'agit d'une uchronie, une énième variation autour du thème du Troisième Reich victorieux de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

Sauf que ce roman a été publié en 1937, au moment où Hitler était au pouvoir à Berlin. Remis dans son contexte de publication, ce livre est donc un récit d'anticipation, une dystopie dans laquelle l'autrice décrivait un monde dominé par l'idéologie nazie poussée jusqu'à la caricature.

Le récit commence bien, nous plongeons dans une Allemagne nazie fantasmée, oscillant entre vision d'horreur et caricature presque drôle. Sept-cent ans après sa mort, Hitler est adoré comme un dieu et représenté comme un grand blond aux cheveux longs. Les femmes sont opprimées, considérées comme des animaux et ne servent qu'à reproduire la race aryenne. L'Allemagne domine totalement l'Europe après avoir vaincu la France, la Russie et le Royaume-Uni, et l'Empire Japonais domine le reste du globe, dont les Etats-Unis. Les deux grands puissances s'opposent dans une longue guerre froide sans conflit armé et sans vainqueur ni vaincu.

Le récit débute quand Alfred, un anglais en pèlerinage sur les lieux saints allemands, retrouve son ami Hermann, un ancien soldat allemand qu'il avait rencontré cinq ans plus tôt lorsque celui-ci servait au sein de l'armée d'occupation en Grande-Bretagne.

La suite met les deux amis en relation avec un Chevalier, un aristocrate nazi qui appartient à la classe sociale qui domine le régime nazi. Celui-ci en sait beaucoup plus que ses compatriotes sur la réalité de la foi nazi et sur leur divinité Hitler.

Si l'idée de départ m'a séduit, le récit m'a un peu ennuyé par moment. On assiste surtout à de longs dialogues entre Alfred et le chevalier Van Hess : c'est parfois passionnant, mais c'est surtout l'occasion pour l'autrice de dérouler ses idées sur l'idéologie nazie. C'est évidemment très pertinent, mais c'est parfois artificiel dans un contexte romanesque.

J'ai donc été en partie déçu par ce roman, un peu ennuyant parfois malgré une idée de départ très séduisante.

It is said that Swastika Night is 1984 older, long-forgotten sibling, a companion piece of sorts. I can see that. I can even see some degree of inspiration for the latter—though I can't help but think George Orwell's is the better novel. Burdekin's prose, though not bad by any means, is notably not as good as Orwell's. It reads well, but tends to be overly didactic at times, and though we have some really great scenes—the very first chapter, for example, is really, really powerful, and certainly one of the highlights—, I believe SN's importance is purely historical.

However, that is not to say this isn't an interesting book. SN was written in 1937, before the war even started, showing an incredible power of thought. What Burdekin did was write a dystopian novel about the aftermath of a war that was yet to happen, picturing a future 700 years ahead, in which the Axis won and dominated Europe. The society we find in this book is sickening, and the treatment of women leaves more than enough room for discussion. Even the main characters are deeply flawed, being males in a extremely misogynistic society, and their redeeming qualities are all in spite of. The one serious problem I found was Burdekin's treatment of homosexuality. The indulgence in acts of homosexuality in SN's society is seen as preferable to those with women, but it seems that it happens only because ladies aren't exactly seen as human beings. I couldn't shake off the feeling that Burdekin added homosexuality to the mix as a form of reproach, as part of her argument that women are intrinsic to a proper functioning of our society—without them, we'd have homosexuality! the horror! I obviously agree with her for the most part, but I can't with homophobia. 1937 or not, I just can't.
