Starshine

This book, the first in a trilogy, started with great promise, and I enjoyed the author's writing style and initial introduction of the various characters. Also, there was a decent amount of action in the various venues and the plot moved forward nicely. However, after a good start to the tale, things began to get bogged down, focusing instead on building a romantic relationship instead of moving the action forward. I understand that many readers may be looking for this type of direction in a book, but for me it fell flat and left me wishing for less romantic/emotional tension and more plot-advancing action. I also had a problem with the foul language regularly used by the main protagonist; it turned me off, quite frankly, the opposite of what I think the author intended. I found myself skipping large sections of the text (especially when [no spoiler warning needed] the relationship went to the “next level”). After getting through about 3/4 of this first book, I realized that I would have to wade through another 2 books at least to get to some sort of resolution, at which point I bailed.

Waaaaayyyyyyyy too many characters! I was getting fatigued just trying to remember all of the characters in this book; I actually had to start a notes page just to remember who some of them were. That being said, I really enjoyed Alex and Caleb's chapters. And I am interested to see where the story goes. I just hope the author isn't planning to introduce too many more new characters in the next book!

Good SF with a heavy romance sub-theme.
What do we have here: Alien invasion, check; human vs human war, check; dastardly dark treachery, check; high-tech hi-jinks, check; spy/covert ops action, check; star-crossed lovers, check. What's not to like?
I will read the rest of the series.

Sorry, got to 45% and gave up.

Possibly an interesting story, but the gooey-eyed, awful romance sub-story was just too awful to get through.
