A wonderful mind-expanding treatise, written with humor and clarity. I enjoyed the refresher course on the fundamentals and then had my brain thoroughly exercised and expanded with what came after. As big a maths fan as I am, I still had to slow down and plow though some parts dealing with topics I'd previously ignored or given short shrift to. The most fun I've had in some time while getting a headache. After the pain receded, I felt that my brain contained more than I realized it could, and was the better for it. Filled with fun things to do with balloons, straws, paper strips, pencil and compass and more! My only regret is that the author didn't provide more computer code for those of us inclined to follow along - I'll have to come up with my own so I can continue playing. Not having read the previous books in the Gideon Crew series, I sometimes felt the emotional impact of the events in the book were a bit understated, although that could well be because I was new to the characters. There was no lack of excitement in the story itself, and although I did guess at some of the “twists” in the narrative before they occurred, that did not diminish the pleasure of reading it.

A worthy successor to Revenger! Continuing the tale of alien artifacts, space pirates and a well-developed far-future solar system, layered on top of a mystery underpinning it all.

Classic Clarke tale, filled with inspirational technical achievements and wonderful descriptive prose.

Very well told and kept my attention. Really appreciated the “realism” portrayed of what traveling and waging war at high speeds in space involves as far as distances, time, strategy, etc. The only downsides were the constant self-doubt in the protagonist's internal dialog (although very reasonable, it became tedious) and the constant “political” undermining, maneuvering, hostility (also not unreasonable, unfortunately, but also grew tedious). How may times does this have to happen before real change can be seen? But I still enjoyed the book and will likely pick up the sequels.
