Went directly into my notes app to draft up this nonsense 😂
this is my review now idc 💁🏼♀️
I don't feel like tidying it up into something more public eyes friendly
My reviews are mainly for myself anyways 🥴
Rating: ???
Mixed feelings
Pros -
Fun "easy" read
Hashtag relatable
Hilarious sh*t happens
Gorey asfff
Sh*tty men die horrible deaths they definitely deserve
Vampires duh
✨️vibes✨️
Pro/con - lot of the dialogue was cheesy as hell
It's giving campy horror
Cons -
Some of the writing was irritating (overly descriptive like: "...it hurts like nothing I've ever felt before. What I imagine it would be like to have a tooth extracted without anesthetic, a bone hammered broken, a limb axed off. A removal. An unwelcome alteration." Like okay damn we get it geez moving on lmao)
The ending/epilogue was ??? kind of a mess? weird and didn't make much sense IMO
There's plot holes, so many plot holes
The vamp lore and overall world building didn't feel fully fleshed out
Insta love in the cringiest way possible like mf you are bein goofy rn pls shut the f* up 😂😭
Fmc b*tching and moaning like every other page about being "old" (36) and uGlY, and miserable
Annoying but honestly same gurl 💀
The toxic bestie situation, like are y'all okay? 🤔
Basically -
If I was rating for vibes and overall enjoyment of the absolute *ride* that was this book then it's a 4.5 but if I'm rating based on the writing and story, then it's more like a 3.5 and honestlyyy I think if I hadnt read this while I was hormonal it would've gotten a solid 3 stars ngl
I did actually like how the author made the reader get the distinct feeling that the ending would somehow involve the dream mall and it would likely be a tragedy (or is that just me? Surely not?)
2.5 rounded down.
So, on a whim I purchased 3 of Rachel Harrison's books, and I didn't realize exactly what I was getting into.
The covers make me think I am going to get a fun, cozy horror book, if that's even a thing, however what they seem to be is a lecture on feminism poorly disguised in a book about supernatural creatures.
The two FMCs were both insufferable in their own ways, one too whiney, one too irresponsible, and I just didn't enjoy it at all.
The protagonist was SOOO annoying. She was obviously supposed to be flawed, but the book didn't really introduce any good qualities to balance out her flaws and make her likeable in any way. Not even flawed in a cool evil bitch way either, she was just super lame and grating. I liked the vampire stuff but it takes way too long to get into that, and the focus is really on the friendship of the two main women, and unfortunately they are both annoying and their friendship isn't particularly interesting. I didn't really like the style of writing either.
Tbh I hated Sloan the whole time which sucks cause it's her book but I really liked the other characters and wish we got to see more of them + actually develop the main lesbian relationship
i don't think that i could ever rate a rachel harrison book less than 3 stars because i just adore her writing and how she fleshes out her characters. i always love her female friendships/relationships which is the same here. i do think this story was a bit underbaked. the pacing was off and the story wrapped up super abruptly including the vampire elements, the horror of the story. i also think this is the least i connected to one of her characters in a novel of hers, not because she it a bit older than the rest, but because i was dealing with the issues she is when i was 15 and seeing her deal with them later on just wasn't relatable for me. i'm sure it will truly resonate with someone who is and i do think it was handled well, but i just didn't have that connection i normally do from a rachel harrison book. but as i said i adore her writing, her humor, her ability to convey emotions and inner turmoil, and her female relationships and that is no different here.
So so great!! Sometimes when I have an issue I'm working out I think “how would Rachel Harrison translate this into a supernatural situation and then what would be her genius extremely topical and relatable intersectional feminist approach to addressing it” and then I just translate it back to reality and all my problems are solved.
Sloane, you need to remove your head from your sphincter, sweetheart. I went from feeling bad for her to wanting to throttle her. But in the end, no matter how hot the hot guy is, her best friend is her favorite person and greatest love.
As always, a good, fun Rachel read about best friends, vampires, and quarter-life/midlife crises; about staying in limp or awful relationships and finding yourself, even when you are a grown adult. About found family and love, and how frustrating it can be to be a woman in the world; and how nice it can be to scare awful, sexist men.
I adore Naomi and Ilie.
Midlife crisis vampire best friends? Yes please.
I binged it in two days! Insane. This is such a lovely little story on friendship, growing older, and most importantly about living. I could have had more though (you could say I'm “so thirsty” for more
