One of those coming of age at summer (roller) camp stories I'm a sucker for! Yeah, this story is pretty cute and well illustrated and reminds me of Smile or Sunny Side Up. Pretty amazing to watch a young punk grow up and learn understanding and respect to her two different types of friends. ~Ashley
Very cute graphic novel about an aspiring roller derby player. I love that Astrid struggles. I don't love that for her, but I love what it shows the reader. That's something my own kids struggle with, putting in the work. I feel like this graphic novel does a good job showing that growth over time. Artwork is very cute and the location is very clearly defined. It definitely felt super Portland as I was reading it.
I loved this!!! Tribe!!! What a great story about becoming who you are as opposed to who you are as a pair in a best friend unit. Astrid managed to learn, at the last minute how to be a good friend as well.
Highly recommended!!
This comic book was just super cute. Great storytelling, artwork and sense of humor, and still being realistic about tweenage girlhood and growing into your own interests.
(Read for Book Riot's #readharder challenge: Read a non-superhero comic that debuted in the last three years.)
this is SUCH a perfect look at the middle school/junior high transition, and making new friends, and the struggles of learning a new sport. and it's so funny!! an obvious, awesome readalike for [b:Smile 6393631 Smile Raina Telgemeier https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1256154174s/6393631.jpg 6582125].of course, the true star is SLAY MISERABLES and her Hugh Jackman cardboard cutout, I mean, I can't even.
Quick cute read about a 12-year-old girl joining roller derby and growing apart from her best friend. I read it basically in one sitting. The facial expressions are great and I love how the derby information is accurate, as a skater myself! This is more mid-grade than I usually read, but I'd definitely recommend it for kids in that age range!
