Een dag in het leven, met een wat wonderlijke verhaallijn er doorheen gewoven.
Een 17-jarige zoon van een evangelische dominee (een beetje een loser, met een veel succesvollere concurrent) probeert er binnen het gezien maar het beste van te maken gezien zijn eigen geaardheid.
“Adam knew the answer was supposed to be no, so he only said ‘yes' in his head”
Via een reeks ontmoetingen krijgen we een beeld van de betekenis van liefde en liefhebben, en relaties: familie, vrienden, geliefden. Onverwachte Zwarte Pieten-verwijzing. Tegelijk heeft een recente moord op een junkie in hetzelfde stadje nog wat bij-effecten:
“Before she can even think, she removes his head from his body. The faun can't fix this, not while the Queen still holds the man's head.”

Une très belle histoire avec des personnages bien écrits et attachants. Du très bon Patrick Ness, une fois de plus.
My least favourite Patrick Ness book so far unfortunately. As many others will mention I just didn't see the necessity of the stranger half of the book. The main body of the story is okay, however I have seen other YA authors do this kind of thing better. I really like Ness as a writer and I have enjoyed a lot of his other books but I'm not a great fan of this (or his last book).
I really love Patrick Ness's writing, every time it's a real page turner that I can't let go. Same goes for Release which I really liked, mind one star because the two stories intertwining are a bit messy and don't go very well together except at the very end. Adam is adorable, as much as I despised his pure christian family and all those falsehoods going on. In fact, all the people in this book are quite enjoyable, and the story ends up to be very touching and moving, while keeping a good rhythm. I also can't thank Patrick Ness enough to introduce LGBTI characters in the YA genre, and hope those will be translated here :)
