Un must read.
Mother of god that book was good! This book has drawn comparisons to Ender's Game and Hunger Games and those are the most perfect representations of this book. Immediately buying the rest of the books
4.75 stars! what an incredible story! Not yet making it a new fave, but I have such high expectations for this series as I am completely obsessed with both the world and the characters!

Kind of generic dystopian / hero's journey like the Hunger Games or Ender's Game, but I'm a sucker for that shit and enjoyed this one just as much. The sequels (especially the second trilogy) get more complex
Absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read the sequel!
I loved how in depth we got into this world and can't wait to see where it goes from here.
This book kept me on my toes and pulled me magnetically through the entire story. An amazing Sci-Fi novel that I felt really captured what I've been looking for lately with an in-depth character study.
Didn't expect to love this book and really glad I picked it up. A definite recommend!
It always surprises me when a book meets my expectations, and I had pretty high expectation for this one.
I can't wait to continue reading the series.
I highly recommend the audiobook read by Tim Gerard Reynolds. I am very picky about narrators as I believe they can make or break a book/series. Obviously Tim Gerard Reynolds is the former. He gives so much life to this wonderful book.
I'm very glad I didn't read the ebook first. This is a series I know I'll re-read over and over but this will be the first series when I'll relisten to the audiobooks over and over.
Very excited to start book two!
I have heard great things about the series, so I plan to continue on even though I wasn't blown away by this installment. The characters and world are interesting. The plot was okay. I loved the beginning but felt that the second half dragged.
wow i really didn't like this. didn't like the writing style, the world, characters, tropes, anything. if i didn't have to finish this for a readathon, i would have dnf'd it. a lot of the horrible things in this world that happened seemed to have happened for shock value, and i was rolling my eyes a lot of the time. talk about angsty. don't get the hype at all.
I'm a little late to the game with this series, but better late than never!
This sci-fi dystopian novel follows a society that is segregated into castes based on color; the lowest being the reds and the highest being the golds. The novel starts with Darrow, a red who is working to make Mars habitable for the human race, when his wife sacrifices herself for a cause that he hardly knew anything about. His life irrevocably changes, and we follow him as he joins with rebels and fights back against their oppressors.
The beginning of this book instantly gripped me. I loved the concept and already really like the characters. This book gives off strong “The Hunger Games” vibes, which made me excited. However, when the “test” started, which takes up the majority of the book, I lost some of my interest. The ending was predictable, so I felt that all of the time we spent in this test was boring and pointless. What kept me listening was Darrow as a character. He is an incredibly interesting narrator who I feel has a lot of potential in the future books. While I didn't love this book, I gave it a 3/5 stars because of Darrow and because I believe that this series has a lot of potential. I will be continuing the series and have high hopes.
TW: attempted rape, attempted suicide, bullying, eugenics, misogyny, murder, mutilation, rape (mentioned), sexual assault, slavery, violence
Fun and fast-paced listen. Is it breaking new ground? No. Is it diving deep into world building or a magic system? Also, no. But, I found it enjoyable and will continue with the series to see how the story and characters develop. I think listening to this with my boyfriend also helped my enjoyment, because he was really into it.
If you like Hunger Games, Battle Royale, or possibly Ender's Game, you may like this book.
Una stella in meno per un po' di prolissità nella parte centrale che cala un po' di livello rispetto al resto. Ottimo il “finale non finale”, la saga ha un grande potenziale. Ho già iniziato il secondo volume.
LOVED this book. It's been awhile that I've devoured something so quickly. Maybe it is the times we are experiencing now or that Hunger Games style competition, who knows, I just enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
I can't wait to read the sequel. I'm just getting into sci-fi and this one hit a home run. The pace is perfect, the characters outstanding, the premise so cool, and the ending,,,,, well, you'll just have to read it. LOVED it!
3/5.
Despite a concept that, while familiar in most dystopian fiction, had potential, the writing style, plot, and character development ultimately bring the story down. The first half is drawn out longer than necessary, with an interesting section right before the second act which soon transforms the book into a Hunger Games derivative. Even then, the world and characters are flat and the last two thirds of the book feel too contrived and underserved by the writing style. I've heard the next two books are better, so I'll at least try them since I do like the concept.
i feel...weird about this. i love the idea and the beginning and the set-up and concept and world of this story. it had a lot that i liked. but the writing was direct and completely telling to the point of ridiculousness. it almost felt like a robot was translating a movie into writing. it was so on-the-nose and to-the-point it became tedious and displeasurable to read. also it was a little too close to the hunger games for comfort. but i still want to read the rest of the series.
I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but whooo boy, did I enjoy it.
With Dark Age coming out next week, I decided I needed to binge read the series so I'm good and ready for it.
Immensely entertaining, the story immediately hones right in on Darrow and stays there. This, I think, adds to the intensity. And intense it is. Heart pounding and heart breaking in equal measure.
I did struggle a bit with the believability of a 16 year old boy being that skilled in strategy and thinking on his feet. Sure, he screws up a few times, which we would expect him to do, but I dunno. Then I think, ok, this guy has been toiling in the mines, has a FIERCE loyalty and love for his family and wife, so maybe he is that evolved. Anyway, this just makes it more intriguing for me, truth be told. I can't wait to see what happens next. I really want Darrow to succumb, just a bit, to the temptations of Gold life. He is human after all, right?
I'm also really hoping Golden Son explores Darrow's relationship with Mustang ... lots of ?'s hanging over that one.
On to book 2!
Darrow was born into the red color class, the lowest of all colors. Called the pioneers of Mars their life's duty is to mine helium-3, a substance needed to terraform the surface of the planet. For hundreds of years, various clans of Reds have been mining and living a lie. The surface of Mars is complete and an entire society rests upon the pits and mines the Reds call home. The Golds, the highest in the society look down upon all colors and have allowed the lies to continue. Who better to do their dirty work than the Reds? When Darrow's wife is killed, he learns the truth of his life and promises revenge. But the Golds are superior in every way. From the implants in their brains to their reinforced bodies. And in order to infiltrate their ranks, Darrow must become a Gold. The pain he endures as his body is literally torn apart and put back together again will be nothing compared to what he must face in the Gold's academy. A place where betrayal and bloodshed go hand in hand, and through it, all Darrow must not lose himself along the way.
Red Rising is an intense book. If you're familiar with the political oppression from The Hunger Games, take it to the next level. The Reds are kept in deplorable conditions and can be killed for simply singing the wrong songs. And the worst part is the way they must die. If you are sentenced to death you hang, but on Mars, there isn't enough gravity to snap your neck. You are forced to pull your loved ones by the feet and snap their necks. Most women also have to sell themselves for food and medicine in order for their families to survive.
Make sure you have a strong stomach, or at least prepare yourself before reading this. The procedure to change Darrow from a Red to a Gold is written in detail and the cruelties that take place throughout the book may be a trigger. But none of the violence is overdone, or for shock value. It allows the reader to see who the Golds really are and just how far they are willing to go. You will come to hate them as much as Darrow by the end of the first book.
This was brilliantly written and I can't wait to see what Darrow will accomplish in the next book.
