In the small town of Holt, Colorado, a high school teacher is confronted with raising his two boys alone after their mother retreats first to the bedroom, then altogether. A teenage girl—her father long since disappeared, her mother unwilling to have her in the house—is pregnant, alone herself, with nowhere to go. And out in the country, two brothers, elderly bachelors, work the family homestead, the only world they’ve ever known. From these unsettled lives emerges a vision of life, and of the town and landscape that bind them together—their fates somehow overcoming the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant. As the milieu widens to embrace fully four generations, Kent Haruf displays an emotional and aesthetic authority to rival the past masters of a classic American tradition.

Delícia de livro da coleção da Rádio Londres, leitura de uma sentada com os vários dramas de uma cidade pequena e seus grandes dramas de toda uma humanidade...
Have you ever had that feeling where you picked up a book and just felt a blissful sense of relief? That's what I felt when I started reading this book. Haruf had such a beautiful way with words, and, despite the fact that his characters' lives are nothing like mine, I feel at home when I read his prose. So I am yet again impressed by Haruf's delicate and uncluttered style (although, I'll never be a fan of the no-quotation mark trend), but quite honestly I didn't fall for the characters as much as in [b:Our Souls at Night 23602562 Our Souls at Night Kent Haruf https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1418766517s/23602562.jpg 43166999]. That book had such an emotional pull that I do feel was lacking this time round, not because of any particular faults, I just didn't find the characters and the story as powerful. An easy and enjoyable read, however, and I am left looking forward to the next book I read by Haruf.
