Would categorize as strange romance. Relationships that are sweet and toxic at the same time. (Updated on 3/14 to 5 stars)
This is gonna sound psychotic, but with everything I heard about this book I was expecting it to be more gross, and I was a little disappointed that it wasn't.
what's with the piss thing,,,, but still a fun and weird book and a quick read. greatly encapsulates what it feels like to study abroad and feel like an alien
Dreamy, weird and held my attention.
Jo has arrived in a foreign (very English-sounding) country to attend school. She ends up rooming with a Carrol, in an old brewery that has sort of been turned into an apartment house. They used particle board to separate the rooms (and it doesn't go all the way to the ceiling). Not sound-proof at all. There is a neighbor I'm not sure actually existed.
Either the women start experiencing some sort of magical transformation (the brewery is becoming a garden) OR they are having shared delusions. Either way, I had no idea what was going to happen next and read this in one sitting.
The writing was lovely in spots, and very evocative, and I enjoy a dreamlike feel where the logic and boundaries are a bit off, but I really think I needed this to be occasionally more grounded for contrast.
My fave tribute to feminism, apples, and The Garden of Eden, remains Comfort Me with Apples, by Catherynne M. Valente.
I truly don't think there's any way I can rate this. Good and bad aren't terms that could even begin to describe how I felt about the book. This book isn't for everyone, I still can't tell you if it's for me or not (I probably never will be able to) but I have no regrets reading it
Did not like it at all. I dont why i read it. I dont know why edwards recommended it. I can ssee the ending. I gave one star for the ending because it shone a light on the plot.
“ I liked the sound of Carral's mouth as she took a huge bite out of one of the golden apples and crushed the sweet flesh between her teeth. The soft yellow of the peel was almost the same as her hair. “
Pros
- beautifully rich and vulnerable prose
- easy to get through
- palpable atmosphere of humid, hazy queer confusion
- piss and decay
Cons
- symbolism with not much substance
- overused garden of eden theme
- unconvincing characters
- sorta reductive gender roles
It's 2024 and I'm still thinking about this book so that should tell you something. Maybe I'll read Paradise Lost and do a re-read? I can't get over how visceral it is. So weird, so much urine.
i liked when she peed into the other girls pee. something about apples. you aren't as interesting as you think Jenny Hval.
