I just couldn't get through this. I felt like all the twists were way too foreshadowed and, while knowing the “aha!” parts of a story don't always mean that the story is bad, I didn't find the writing compelling enough to continue. Just not the right book for this particular reader.
Didn't love.... didn't hate. Interesting premise just didn't think the details were worked out very well. I didn't find characters fleshed out either. I didn't understand their motivations. There was enough there for me want to finish the book but I wouldn't pick up another novel by Kubica anytime soon.
She managed to insert a surprising twist, but it hasn't made up for the bland main character and the stereotype stepdaughter.
Goodness this book made me angry. I feel like it hit every tired trope–a creepy house, a creepy island, a creepy goth niece, an unreliable narrator, a supposedly shocking twist. If I hadn't read this book on my kindle I would have punt it out the window. I mean, I really wouldn't have done that either because I respect books too much, but I would have figuratively punt it out the window.
likes
- good tone & atmosphere
- partially liked one of the twists
dislikes
- writing was SO overly descriptive in some parts; this probably could have been shortened by ~50 pages
- the side-plot of Imogen & her mother just went nowhere in the end??
- REALLY don't like the use of DID as a plot twist & the trope of people with DID being psychotic/murderous being included
- epilogue was super unnecessary
it was okay but I don't know if I'll check out other books of Kubica unless the plot really interests me
