Fun romance with a unique lead. Pippa is considered odd by almost every other character in the book. She's very intelligent, with an eye for scientific discovery and experimentation. She thinks of things in a logical manner that's rarely seen in romance novels. Her romantic interest is Cross, who is also known for his intelligence/ability to think things through.
The book got a little slow in the middle, but overall it was enjoyable and worth the read!
I liked the concept of it, I liked the characters for the most part and their banter, but the characters seemed to go on and on about their circumstances. I'm also disliking how they try to martyr themselves and the need to push in tons of angst. Like if there wasn't what happened at 95%, I would have liked this book a wee bit more, especially since it's resolution was.... honestly I don't know how it was solved, the character just up and changed their mind.
Now the question is if I'll continue the series. I was reading this series to get to book 4, but recently I read some not-great reviews of it. So, do I push myself through another book to get to one I also might not like, or so I move on? Because at this point, I'm wondering why I read historical romance at all. Which is a shame to say! There are so many good things in this book and it wasn't hard to get through– it went by quickly, I just– I'm not sold on this author's storytelling, I think. I have some thinking to do.
I didnt enjoy this one as much as Penelopes story. I was expecting to like it even more because I really like Pippa, however I felt like she kind of fell flat in this book. Cross was just weird. As soon as Knight tried to weasel his daughters marriage to Cross, I made some assumptions on what was going to happen, turns out that my assumptions were right! So I was a little annoyed that this book was so predictable.
I also didnt understand why Pippa felt so betrayed by Cross when he announced his betrothal, when she herself is oh, I dunno, betrothed to Castleton! I really liked Castleton, and his behavior was simply beyond reproach throughout the whole book.
