This is a re-read from me! I've watched the new Nimona movie - only kinda remembering the book. So, revisiting the book it is wonderful to see what elements/moments they kept and how it has been expanded to retell the story. BOTH are wonderful though! I enjoyed this book, nicely stylized, and such an easy and compelling one shot story that is well put together still.
fantastic!
I love a good subversive read. If you're looking for an easy read that subverts your expectations of the genre without being too much, this is the pick for you.
Nimona made me chuckle, made me furrow my brows, and made me teary-eyed. From start to finish, this felt like a delightful and energizing journey. The art fits the storyline so, so well -- every stroke feels rough, raw, and real, just like the characters and the plot.
A surreal graphic novel that I went into with absolutely no clue what to expect (I just wanted to read it before watching the film with my daughter) and was blown away.
What does it mean to be a hero or a villain? Where does a sidekick end and a supervillain begin? Is friendship more important than winning?
And dragons, monsters, fighting, evil plans, cute cat, science, more fighting, dinosaurs, love ...?
This began as a web comic and grew an audience there. This version has some bonus content: sketches showing the evolution of the characters and Christmas mini-stories.
The artwork is individual, beautiful and horrifying at times. At first I found it simplistic but I wasn't being fair and now the intricacies of the beautifully drawn characters stay with me. The story, also, has depth and complexities that deserves pondering over and probably returning to.
Another graphic novel read on my phone that I'll be seeking out in print as I feel I've not (literally) got the full picture in this format.
If you're seeing this review wondering “hmm should I read Nimona before or after watching the movie on Netflix??”
READ IT FIRST.
When I tell you this is a COMPLETELY different story. I was shocked when I was reading the stark differences. I know normally shows go off and do there thing, but will still reference the original work. That's not what happened here lol.
The story told in the book was still a good one! And I enjoyed my time reading it.
I did like the Netflix story more than the book 😩
Loved that this and the adaptation were so different, while both still share this amazing essence
This story is NOT as lighthearted as it comes off.
That being said, I still really enjoyed it. Nimona was a fantastic character to read about and her mentor/mentee & father/daughter relationship with Ballistar was incredibly cute. Fighting a corrupt institution is always a good plotline to read about too, and this one was no exception.
That said, it got pretty dark near the end of the book, in a way that you can both see coming but also kinda blindsides you. The tone of the first half of the book is mostly criminal yet goodhearted shenanigans and it does a COMPLETE turn for the second half. Not gonna lie, it had me on the edge of my seat at the end. I am glad that it had a more hopeful ending because the story could've gone in a lot of different directions but I'm happy with where it ended up!
Bizarre in a heartwarming way, Nimona is an absolute joy ride and that bittersweet ending is just a cherry on top of this marvelous story.
this books was amazing and i flew threw it. i even teared up a little at the end!
so excited to try to teach this to my freshmen this year!!
This was a delight to read and left me wanting more of Nimona and Blackheart and their adventures. Stevenson's art is vibrant and expressive and I love the mix of medieval and modern fashion and technology. Nimona, though violent and childish on the surface, is really just looking to be loved. Her banter with Blackheart is funny and I love her chaotic energy. Blackheart is a very upstanding villain and I like how he focuses on harming the Institution and not civilians. Of course the dragons are wonderful 😎 and the world seems like it has a rich background. I'd be interested in learning more about the Institution and how it came to be.
Took a while for the plot to start rolling and I got distracted by several other books before I returned to this and discovered that the story was delightful and engaging and I regretted not having finished it sooner.
great book
I really enjoyed this graphic novel nimona as a character was really fun and scary at the same time. Loved the relationship between Nimona and lord ballister super cute
So cute and a great story
I went into this story completely ignorant. I had no idea what it was about only that it was well liked. I loved the characters of Nimona and Ballister,. I thought the plot was great and well developed. I will gladly read more by Noelle Stevenson.
A fantastic graphic novel. Awesome characters, great artwork and a suspenseful plot. Highly recommended.
This graphic novel was an disappointment. It took me 4 days to finish and I only finished because this was a library book andnI didn't want to return it unread. The plot and characters were OK and nothing that happened surprised me.
Artwork is amazing. The story took an unexpected turn and although I liked the darker parts of it, there seemed to be a tone shift that didn't quite gel with the first half. Enjoyed it though. I would reckon a 10-12 year old would love Nimona and how she is portrayed.
I've heard about this book for years and finally got around to reading it. I wish it were longer. I wish there were sequels. I wish there was a tv show and a series of movies. I just absolutely loved it. A great read.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS COMIC!!!
In Short:
A lonely gay villain adopts a daughter all the while his -friends to lovers to enemies to lovers- is progressing.
