Wow. One of the best realistic fiction books I have read in a long time. I laughed I cried and I found it very relatable. Highly recommend.
I feel like there wasn't that much progression with Jane. She wasn't anything more at the end.
Much like reality TV, despite kind of hating it, I rapidly consumed this book about reality TV.Jane Sinner needs both credits for her high school diploma and to reinvent herself. What better way to do both than competing in a Big Brother-esque reality show produced by film students at a local community college? Why wouldn't that solve everything? This premise is very up my alley, but I have some questions. Why are there no chapters? Why is the dialogue formatted like text messages? Are we really supposed to believe Jane has time to journal this descriptively? Why is chocolate milk such a featured beverage? Why is there so much vomit? There is an abnormal about of vomit, and frankly, it is gross.I have some bigger questions about (read: issues with) portrayal of mental illness. Why are efforts to understand and treat it so half-assed? For a book so preoccupied by psychotherapy, why is there never any real therapy? I think what it comes down to is, I can root for a snarky disaster of a main character, but I can't get behind talking about suicide with that same snark. Some may find it relatable, but it doesn't sit right with me.I'm sure this speaks to others in ways it didn't me. I found it gratuitous, at times almost irresponsible. I really liked bits and pieces, but couldn't find consistency.
