মাই নেম ইজ রেড আমার পড়া ওরহানের দ্বিতীয় বই। আগে ইস্তানবুল পড়ে এবং মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলাম।

এই বইটার সময়টা ১৬৯১ সালের কয়েকটাদিন। তবে সব মিলে গল্পের ব্যাপ্তি কয়েকশতকের। ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস যেমন হয়, ইতিহাস থাকে কম (সেটুকু যথাসম্ভব অবিকৃত রাখা হয়) এবং তার মেজাজে বেশ একটা গল্প বলা হয়। এও তেমনি।

সচরাচর ইতিহাস বলতে যা বুঝি তা হচ্ছে খুনের ফর্দ। সেভাবে দেখলে যে সময়টার কথা বলা হয়েছে পৃথিবী মোটামুটি শান্ত। বিশেষ করে অটোমান সাম্রাজ্য বহিঃশত্রুর ভয়ে ভীত নয়। সুলতান সুলেমানের বেশ শক্ত একটা ভিত্তির ওপর অটোমান সাম্রাজ্য অটল তখন। ইউরোপে রেঁনেসা হয়ে গেছে, ভারতবর্ষে সম্রাট আকবর রাজত্ব করছে এবং কেউই এখন বোকার মত হুঁট করে অন্য রাজ্য আক্রমণে যায় না। একটা আন্তর্জাতিক কূটনৈতিক কাঠামো তৈরী হয়েছে। তবুও এটা অটোমান সাম্রাজ্যের একটি ক্রান্তিকাল। সেই সাথে পুরো মুসলিম পৃথিবীরও হয়ত। ধর্মীয় প্রতিক্রিয়াশীলতার ফাঁক গলে যেটুকু আলো আসছিল সেটুকুও বন্ধ হলো এই সময়ে।

গল্পটা সাংস্কৃতিক দ্বন্দ্ব এবং আগ্রাসনের। আগ্রাসনটা ধর্মীয়। দ্বন্দ্বটা ইউরোপীয় চিত্রকলার সাথে অটোমান চিত্রকলার। মনে রাখা দরকার রেঁনেসা পরবর্তী ইউরোপ যেখানে লিওনার্দো দা ভিঞ্চির মত শিল্পীর আবির্ভাব তার বর্ণচ্ছটা কম না। এদিকে মুসলিম চিত্রকলার মূল উদ্দেশ্য বই অলঙ্করণ। দুইধরনের চিত্রকলার দর্শনে বিশাল ফাঁরাক। এই দ্বন্দ্বটা বইটার মূল বিষয়গুলোর একটা। আর চিত্রকলার ওপর যে ধর্মীয় নিপীড়ন দেখা গেলো তার সময়কালও ঘটনার অনেক আগে থেকে বিস্তৃত। হীরাট নগর ছিল মুসলিম শিল্পচর্চার পীঠস্থান। সেই শহর একরকম গুঁড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয় (পিরিমকুল কাদিরভের ‘বাবর' বইতে তার বেশ ভালো বিবরণ আছে)। কামাল-উদ-দীন বেহজাদের মত মায়েস্ত্রোরা ছিলেন হীরাটে। মূলত এরকম বারবার বিতাড়িত শিল্পীরা বিভিন্ন সুলতানদের কাছে কাজ করতে করতে, তার সাথে চাইনিজ চিত্রকলার মিশেলে একসময় অটোমান চিত্রকলায় রূপ নেয় যার মৃত্যু বইটার উপজীব্য।

বইটার গল্প বোনার পদ্ধতিটা ভালো লেগেছে। চরিত্রগুলো গভীর, মনস্তাত্ত্বিক সংঘাতগুলো আবেদন রাখে। বইয়ের গল্পটা আমি বলতে চাই না। ঝালটা নিজের মুখে খাওয়াই সমীচীন।

Well, I am fence sitting on this one. The overwhelmingly positive reviews from fellow readers make me the outlier on this.

For me I found it a complex and demanding read, yet it was also repetitive and at times numbing in its detail (something I normally find appealing!). While all aspects of the multi-layered story appealed to me, the detail of the miniatures somehow overtook the miniatures as a whole, and I wasn't able to take as much from them as I had hoped.

Without a couple of days off work with a cold, I would probably have laboured harder on this book at its 670 pages of dense text - a larger investment than I am often prepared to make with so many other books awaiting my attention, but it did feel overlong and in my view could have be through a harder edit to reduce page count without affecting the story.

However, I thought it wrapped up much quicker than was necessary (no spoilers so I won't develop that theme much more) with the conclusion to the story of Master Osman and the Sultan's enquiry into the murder left unresolved other than a brief mention.

I am usually a fan of stories with in stories, but I found most of these a distraction - although I realise the reason for having them in the narrative - the formulaic three fables thing seemed to add to the tedium for me as I read.

So, as you can tell, I didn't love this novel. I do think it was masterfully crafted with the continually changing perspective, and aspects were excellent, but for me overlong and drawn out.

On this basis a solid 3 stars.

This book was dense. With a lot of dry history. I read it in fits & starts never making a lot of progress and only occasionally really getting lost in it.

The premise is interesting & the writing was good. I wanted to love this book, but I could barely make myself finish it.
