Overall, a pretty good book! I wasn't the biggest fan of how the narrator was written. I felt as though she was just there as a Narrator, and forgot she was also a character.
Fun, interesting, not too complicated, and a good example of Poirot's knowledge of how people interact with one another!
This is one of Agatha Christie's Middle Eastern novels. The famous detective, Hercule Poirot, finds himself in Iraq, where he stumbles upon a murder within an archaeological expedition. Poirot is asked to investigate and, as expected, he solves the case. Overall, it is a well-written Poirot novel with well-developed characters and a vivid depiction of the local setting.
However, it should be noted that the book is dated, and the portrayal of the local people may not align with contemporary standards of respect.
Having said that, it is still an entertaining read.
A fine mystery. Not as much world building within Mesopotamia as I'd hoped for but
This is one of my favorite Poirot mysteries so far! The setting is superb, and the narrator – Nurse Leatheran – is very entertaining and straightforward. I'd definitely recommend this to lovers of classic mystery.
Некой профессиональной медсестре, которая оказалась в Ираке, предложили неожиданную работу. Не ухаживать за больным, и не оказывать медицинскую помощь, а пожить рядом с нервной дамочкой для ее успокоения. Девушка соглашается и оказывается в центре экспедиции, на раскопках. Экспедиция состоит из нескольких научных сотрудников и их жен, все живут в одном большом доме и многие из них знакомы много лет. Подопечной оказывается редкой красоты и обаяния женщина, которая и правда несколько нервная, но и атмосфера в экспедиции не то, чтобы очень спокойная - что-то витает в воздухе. Правильно - убийство! Оказывается, дама вообще не зря переживала, потому что довольно скоро была убита в почти закрытой комнате, в которую никто не входил. Перед трагическими событиями, она рассказывает своей вновь нанятой компаньонке историю про мужа, который оказался шпионом и был ей сдан куда нужно, но муж бежал из под стражи в неизвестном направлении, и теперь пишет ей угрожающие письма, что если она еще раз выйдет замуж, то он ее того. А она то замужем! Этого она и боялась.
Через пару дней убивают еще одну даму, которая догадалась, как было совершено убийство, и главное - кем.
I enjoyed seeing Poirot from someone else perspective (Nurse Amy). But I did feel like it wasn't completely a Poirot novel, which is what I enjoy so much about them. The killer was unexpected though and it was interesting storytelling because it was so different than most Poirot novels.
I have been reading through all of Christie'a mysteries chronologically and I have to say this one doesn't stand out to me, though I did enjoy it. The best part is the setting, and the narrator is at least not as annoying as Hastings. The characters were semi-interesting. But I felt like I guessed it from the beginning as far as who and why and then the rest was me trying to figure out how the murder was committed, which ended up not being all that impressive. That said, I have really enjoyed some of her less popular books. So it is all a matter of preference.
