I picked this up because I was feeling Halloween-y, but to be honest, Halloween doesn't figure very prominently in the plot. But still, it was very engaging! I had my suspicions all along, but a few of the twists at the end still caught me by surprise. An intriguing mystery!
Such a fun trip to a Scottish town! I loved this start to the series. Fiona is a sweet MC, and her immediate chemistry with a certain someone added a lot of interest to the story. :) The actual action happens in such a short period of time–I found myself feeling a bit bad for her, she must have been so tired, haha–but it wraps up satisfactorily and leaves lots of room for growth in the next books.
Love the change in setting and the adventure! It is, of course, a book of its time, so the treatment of some characters and some of the language is not what we would want to see today–good fodder for discussion, though, if you're reading this with someone younger.
Aside from that, my only complaint was [slightly spoilery] it was that the mystery itself was pretty linear (unlike the previous books which had pretty substantial twists). The more rewarding mystery was the secondary plot regarding some historical treasure. I am a sucker for a hidden treasure, though, so that's not really much of a complaint! ;)
Fascinating and informative! Great for a mystery author looking for inspiration :D The illustrations were neat and sometimes a bit gruesome, but that seemed fitting given the content.
An engrossing historical mystery. I realized upon picking it up that I'd read it years ago, but it was interesting to revisit now!
