Might be my favorite of the 5 in the Hathaways series?? In part because by now the rest of the Hathaways are beloved family members, even when we only get glimpses of them. Good spice, though, Beatrix is a female Dr. Doolittle if ever there was one, and who doesn't love a romance that starts with some good, old-fashioned love letters? I will also begrudgingly admit that I now know more about the original Crimean war (your typical geopolitical battle of egos/tragedy/travesty, when will we ever learn) than I ever suspected I would.
It started out strong. I enjoyed how they fell for each other before even really knowing each other. Actually, I'm not sure why I didn't eat this up but I found myself getting distracted so often I had to constantly go back and re-read. I also felt like the story could have ended but there was so much book left. I rated it 3 stars because (and I guess this is my fault for not checking trigger warnings) but I cannot handle talk of animal abuse etc. Also, don't like how he handled the Prudence fiasco.
Not a big fan of major psychiatric issues being cured through the power of true love, and I kind of wish the whole letter/Cyrano thing had gone on for a bit longer, but it was a perfectly fine historical.
