[1.5] a seemingly never-ending, unhealthy back-and-forth between two closeted college kids in the deep south until their relationship ends on a wholly dissatisfying and unnecessarily tragic note.
half the rants the narrator would go on were reminiscent of empty, drawn-out threads on twitter, and one that i found especially ironic was toward the beginning when Cole was airing his grievances about the lack of profound & contemplative gay novels out there...... despite the fact that the author weaving his tale had basically written yet another cliché story with mcs drowning in self-hate, fathers oozing toxic masculinity, and an ending that further perpetuates the harmful narrative that love between two closeted gay guys can only end in tragedy
