The battle that Cas has to go through to be a good friend and a good ghost hunter are the strength of this book. There are plenty of sketchy adults in this book and I appreciate that the author doesn't try to make them sympathetic. They are vaguely antagonistic and that's a good backdrop for the story. I really appreciate the way that Cas ends up fixing the problem. It was creative and fit right in with the rest of the story.
While I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book (this was more creepy romance than creepy murder) it was still a good read.
My girl Anna was given a raw deal here. She was seriously my favorite part of book 1 and yet, she is rarely ever given page time here. Which I mean... this does make sense considering the end of book 1, but I hoped we'd see more of her besides her being tortured. I swear, the girl was abused in life and then is forced to kill as a ghost, then ends up tortured MORE after trying to be a good being. Then the ending?! I mean, I'm happy for her, but I just wanted her to have all her hopes and dreams. I can only hope she's happy.
I am glad this book goes over the knife more and Cas' ancestry, but this book was a bit slow-paced for me and just felt like it was dragging. The second half is better than the first, but calling this a horror is a stretch.
No as tense and terrifying as Anna Dressed In Blood, but there were still really good moments here. I found Cas to be ridiculously whiny at times and making really bad decisions. I missed Anna, wish she could have actually had more of a part here, but I think if she had it wouldn't have made sense in the story. I'm happy with the way things finished though!
My heart is ripped to pieces, but I'm happy about it.... This is what books do to you ‘‘You're gonna suffer, but you're gonna be happy about it.''
~Full review here on The Bent Bookworm!~Girl of Nightmares is the sequel to the ever-so-popular [b:Anna Dressed in Blood 9378297 Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) Kendare Blake https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1398637405s/9378297.jpg 14261925], so be warned there may be SPOILERS for the first book! This review is also very short because books like this are hard to review without giving too much away and ruining the fun of the read for everyone.———-- Cas is back, and he's just as moody and kind-of-sort-of angry as in the first book. He's not as hell-bent (no pun intended) on revenge, but now he's kind of mooning over the fact that Anna is gone...or is she? At first he thinks he's going crazy as he starts to see her when he's out ghost-hunting, but then he becomes convinced she is in some kind of trouble (more trouble than a usual trip to the afterlife would entail) as she always appears to be tortured when she appears. Yikes.- Cas's friends are more real in this book. At least, this time I actually remembered them, whereas when I started this one, I only had a vague recollection of there being other people involved somewhere...maybe that's my fault, my memory is not the greatest. 😛 His mom is sweet and adorable and reading the scenes with the two of them kind of made my heart hurt. Like, what is it like to be able to be friends with your parents?- Partway through, the book moves to England and I LOVED IT. It just made it that much more interesting even if they didn't get to explore nearly as much as they should have because obviously they were trying to save Anna.- Anna herself is only in this book in VERY short segments. I was a little bit disappointed by that but there was really no way to bring her into the story that would make sense.- The descriptions succeeded in making me pull my covers up and make sure my doors were locked (not that locked doors would help me if there was a ghost after me...buuuuut you know). I love it when a book succeeds in raising the hairs on the back of my neck! Surely I'm not the only one that literally has that happen...not just a figure of speech here!- The ending was...well, it was closure...and that's about all I can say without spoiling it! My hat is off to Kendare Blake for ENDING THIS DUOLOGY right here. I can imagine it might have been tempting to extend it, with the popularity of Anna Dressed in Blood, but it felt really good to finish not only a book but an entire story.Blog Twitter Bloglovin Instagram Google+
Rating sama seperti buku pertama, 3 bintang artinya so-so saja.
I was so glad to return to Cas's world. I think he spent the second book really becoming the warrior he was meant to be. There is an international adventure, some new characters, and some drama between friends. I took it down a star only because I left the story without really understanding Jestine or Gideon and it seemed to me that so much of the set up of the book was to get to Gideon. In the end, I highly recommended this one for fans of Anna. I do not recommend reading this one without having read the first book. Unfortunately it is out of the running as a book club choice due to language, but I can think of ten readers right now that would love this one.
This is going to be a really tough review to write, since I all but flipped out praising Kendare Blake's first book, Anna Dressed in Blood. I was so very excited to see what happened to Anna and Cas after the cliffhanger that Blake left for us in the last book. As soon as I was able to get my hands on a copy of Girl of Nightmares I did! I was eager for more of the stuff of nightmares that drew me in the first time around.
What I found though was a much different book. Anna and Cas are both back. However this time they're so different, and I'll admit that it threw me off a bit. If you'll remember from my review of the first book, I loved Cas' cocky demeanor and lone wolf attitude. What can I say? I'm a sucker for boys like that. The Cas that comes through in this book is a much more lonely and sad boy. Broken, sad, a little like a lonely puppy. Where was my Cas? In the same respect, Anna was there, but also not. I can't explain without spoiling, but I missed her so much.
After a few chapters I finally got used to Cas' new attitude, and was okay with it. Blake does a great job of showing his deep need to find Anna. So I kept reading on, hoping for some scary scenes to keep me up and night and sadly nothing happened. Seriously. There are multiple chapters where nothing exciting happens at all. Now, yes, I understand why. Kendare Blake spends a lot of this book explaining the history behind Cas' athame. She also introduces a new threat in the form of a sinister society with tons of secrets. However without the visceral imagery, the haunting happenings, and the Anna/Cas interaction, I found myself bored. It made for a slow read.
It's actually not surprising to me that I didn't love Girl of Nightmares as much as Blake's first book. I loved Cas as a ghost busting bad-ass. I adored Anna as a vicious yet gorgeous apparition. Everything that I loved about Anna Dressed in Blood was missing here. I applaud the character development, and can't deny that I enjoyed learning about the athame's past. Still, this wasn't my favorite sequel. This is worth a read for closure alone though, especially if you were waiting as eagerly as I was.
It was just . . . meh for me. Full review to come once I finish the exams.
