Ooh, very compelling. There's a lot of setup in this one, and I'm definitely intrigued enough to continue the series. I think I just really love a “washed-up priest” narrative? Anyway, 4 clues found by digging through trash out of 5.
Gideon Falls is an engaging horror mystery that slowly reveals little details of the plot and develops its characters pretty well.
It's only the first volume of, I assume, three, but the volume had 6 chapters which were enough to get a good feel of the story.
We're introduced to a paranoid guy who digs in trash looking for pieces of a black barn which he'd seen in his dreams, and a catholic priest who comes into a small town after their former priest dies, only to witness a bunch of weird things happen his first night there.
The visual storytelling is superb in this one. From the layout of the panels themselves, to the way characters are positioned against each other - the art alone is enough to tell a story. I was a bit annoyed by the grainy feel of the shadows, but it's something I can live, I guess.
I also like how the characters develop together with the story. We learn more about their past, as well as watch them display personal traits we didn't know they had.
One thing I still have reservations about is the heaven vs hell, good vs evil allegory. It's a tired theme that I'm not fond of in literature, and Jeff Lemire is, unfortunately, not known for avoiding cliches in his work.
This is crazy good. Couldn't put it down. Wouldn't be surprised to see a network option it.
